The Northern Waters Library Service (NWLS) is seeking a dedicated and dynamic System Director to guide our organization into the future. Position Overview: As the System Director, you will work closely with our Board of Trustees to lead NWLS in achieving its strategic goals. You will oversee daily operations, manage budgets, and provide essential consulting services to our member libraries. Your leadership will be vital in fostering a collaborative environment where creativity and efficiency flourish.

Key Responsibilities:Serve as the executive officer of NWLS, advising the Board on policy, planning, and budgeting.

  • Develop and manage the annual budget, strategic plans, and compliance documents.
  • Cultivate relationships with member libraries and advocate for their needs at local and state levels.
  • Recruit, supervise, and mentor NWLS staff, creating a work culture that promotes excellence.
  • Monitor legislative developments and engage with stakeholders to generate support for library initiatives.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of public library management principles and practices.
  • Oversees NWLS activities to ensure compliance with public library system requirements from the Wisconsin Department of Instruction. Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited school.
  • Eligibility for Wisconsin Grade 1 library certification.
  • 5 plus years of library management experience, with progressive supervisory responsibility in a library system, consortium, or public library setting.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
