STEM Librarian, Carnegie Mellon University Libraries

Carnegie Mellon University Libraries is looking for a STEM librarian with expertise in math, physics, and/or data science. This position, at a STEM-focused institution such as CMU, provides excellent opportunities to learn about emerging trends in teaching and research, engage in emerging research methods, and champion open and reproducible science.

This position directly supports the Math, Physics, and Statistics and Data Science departments as well as affiliated research centers. The incumbent will be a member of Academic Engagement at CMU Libraries, a team of disciplinary and methodological experts, both faculty and staff, who work to meet and anticipate the research and learning needs of the Carnegie Mellon community.  

ASSIGNMENT: The STEM librarian will: 

  • Develop relationships with faculty and researchers that ensure the usefulness and optimize the impact of library expertise and services

  • Help faculty and students find and manage information and data, and critically evaluate and use research tools

  • Work with methodological specialist colleagues to create learning opportunities that meet the specific needs of students in math, physics, statistics, and data science

  • Apply specialized knowledge of evolutions in mathematical and physical science research to service delivery and design

  • Develop e-first library collections in relevant disciplines 

  • Participate in open initiatives (open access, open science, open data, open source).

  • Participate on project teams in the libraries and across campus

  • Carry out research and produce scholarship

  • Engage in ongoing professional development

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

An advanced degree in a relevant discipline or an MLS/MLIS and a degree in a relevant discipline. Must be able to demonstrate the following in a STEM context:

  • Ability to build and sustain relationships to deliver high impact services at a research-intensive institution

  • Familiarity with scholarly communication needs and preferences, preferably in one of the assigned subject areas

  • Teaching or presenting experience

  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility and demonstrated experience applying principles of diversity and inclusion in service development.

  • Strong collaborative skills and experience working with multiple stakeholders

  • Interest in crafting a research agenda

Preferred:

  • Experience working with and managing data sets relevant to STEM fields, particularly math and physics

  • Working knowledge of statistical software packages and programs

  • Familiarity with various tools and platforms for collaborative research, including GitHub, electronic lab notebooks, open-source and open science tools, and data repositories

Your Faculty Status 

You will be a member of the library faculty, with your initial appointment rank and salary dependent on your experience. In addition to providing responsive library services to faculty, students and staff, you will be encouraged and supported in developing or continuing your own program of research and scholarship related to information science and librarianship and/or to aspects of your disciplinary expertise. You will also participate in governance and projects through various committees and working groups as assigned or elected.

To be considered for reappointment or promotion, you will be expected to demonstrate excellence in librarianship and in research or scholarship as defined by the university policy on librarian and archivist appointments
