Salary Range: Starting at $35,000 annualized with flexibility, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Hours: up to 40 hours per week, exempt.

Job Summary

The Library Assistant IV oversees the operations of the Special Collections reading room in the John Peace Library at UTSA's main campus and interfaces directly with the public during outreach and engagement events. Other duties include paging services, reference services, and assisting department colleagues with collection management and instruction as needed.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates the staffing schedule for the reading room desk, provides desk coverage for an average minimum of 6 hours per week, and serves as the primary backup.
  2. Under the direction of the Public Services & Outreach Archivist, plans, executes and participates in outreach initiatives, events, and exhibits, both on campus and in the San Antonio community.
  3. Assists with the management and training of student workers.
  4. Schedules patron research appointments.
  5. Fulfills JPL patron reproduction requests.
  6. Provides virtual and in-person reference services.
  7. Maintains and updates social media for Special Collections department
  8. Identifies, locates, and retrieves Special Collections materials for patron use, and re-shelves material in storage areas.
  9. Ensures excellent customer service, a welcoming environment, and positive research interactions for all patrons.
  10. Tracks, organizes, and maintains departmental statistics for Special Collections functions.
  11. Participates in department and library-wide committees or task forces.
  12. Assists department colleagues with collections management and instruction as needed.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma
  • Six years of relevant library work. College education can be substituted for required experience on a year-for-year basis (30 hours of college coursework = 1 year experience).Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • One year of experience working with patrons in a special collection.
  • Experience handling rare books and/or manuscripts.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience researching and answering reference questions.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Exhibits a high level of social skills and enjoys engaging in social interactions. Demonstrates enthusiasm for participating in social situations.
  • Ability to read cursive handwriting.
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred.
  • High level of initiative and self-motivation.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders effectively.
  • Reliable and detail-oriented.
  • Commitment to and proactive attitude towards customer service excellence.
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to providing a welcoming environment to both UTSA and San Antonio communities.

  • Must be able to pack and lift boxes and materials up to 40 pounds.This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
