Scholarly Communications & Archives Librarian

Primary Function: The Scholarly Communications & Archives Librarian is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Copyright Center, Institutional Repository, and University digital and physical archives. Provides technical support to students and staff, and communicates with evening/weekend staff regarding any and all systems policy/procedure changes.

Essential Functions:

Maintains the Copyright Center

• Provides expert advice on copyright law and its application in the context of education, research, and public access.
• Ensures compliance with copyright in terms of digitization and distribution of materials in accordance with copyright law.
• Updates the Copyright Center by writing features, adding up-to-date resources and information, and editing and deleting content.
• Obtains copyright permission and ensures accurate recording procedures.
• Corresponds directly with publishers, authors, and other vendors to negotiate copyright license agreements.
• Corresponds directly with faculty on copyright inquiries and status updates.
• Monitor developments in copyright legislation and inform stakeholders of changes.

Manages the Bellevue University Archive Collection & Institutional Repository

• Leads and develops the organization and preservation of physical and digital materials for the archives and institutional repository.
• Digitizes and uploads materials into the digital archives using scanning equipment and image/document-editing software.
• Prepares transcripts and creates metadata.
• Researches items to provide complete metadata as well as historical information associated with said items.
• Investigates and procures materials for the digital and physical archives and institutional repository from other departments on campus and from other local institutions.
• Builds collaborative relationships with other departments on campus and with local archives and historical institutions.

Library Systems Support

• Assists the Assistant Director, Library Systems in their efforts to operate the automation, communication, and online systems within the library.
• Develops and enforces policies related to copyright and preservation of archival materials projects.
• Provides technical assistance to students, staff, and faculty as needed.
• Communicates systems policy/procedure changes to evening and weekend staff, and informs the Systems Librarian of technical issues that arise during evenings and weekends.
• Compiles statistics related to copyright, archives, and the institutional repository.
• Works directly with the Bellevue University service desk and with vendors to resolve technical issues.
• Delivers training sessions, resources, guides, and tools to educate faculty on copyright-related topics, submissions to the Institutional Repository, and access to the University Archives.

Management Functions

• Shares responsibility of the supervision of library services during the day and weekend hours.
• Compiles accurate monthly statistical data.

Miscellaneous

• Helps plan projects and events as they arise, and serves on committees.
• Stays current with and applies the latest trends and developments in the library, information, and technology fields.
• Organizes and aids in organizing Library displays and programs on a rotating basis.
• Contributes to the Library's newsletter "More Than Books" quarterly.
• Participates in professional growth opportunities.
• Contributes to the library social media outlets monthly.
• Sustains a flexible schedule to accommodate staffing needs and cross-training as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Master's in Library Sciences (MLS) from an ALA accredited school or equivalent.
• One (1) year of library experience preferred.
• Familiarity with U.S. Copyright laws, fair use, public domain, and intellectual property rights recommended.
• Proficiency with archival management systems and metadata standards (e.g., MARC, Dublin Core).
• Knowledge of library, technical support, and digitization operations preferred.
• Excellent customer service and written/verbal communication skills.
• Experience with the use of personal computers and Microsoft Office products essential.
• Familiarity with scanning software and document imaging software desired.
• Must be a self-starter, goal-oriented, and work towards department initiatives.
• Must have a pleasant personality and be able to deal with difficult situations while maintain a businesslike manner.

Working Conditions:

• Works in a normal office environment with frequent walking, bending, and/or standing (at least 50% of the time).
• Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
