NATURE OF WORK: The Library Safety Manager leads and coordinates efforts to create a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment at the Evanston Public Library. This role integrates community care with facilities safety management, focusing on de-escalation, conflict resolution, and mediation delivered through a compassionate, trauma-informed approach.
In addition to overseeing the daily operations related to community care, the Manager is responsible for managing building facilities safety, maintaining incident reporting systems, and coordinating emergency services planning with local law enforcement and other relevant entities. The Manager trains and mentors the Library Safety Monitor Team to address the diverse needs of the community, including individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorders, and other social challenges.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):
Work with the Data Analysis Coordinator to collect and analyze data related to safety, community care, and response efforts.
Generate reports for review by library administration and the library board of trustees, providing insights and recommendations for continuous improvement.
Provide regular presentations to the Library Board and others.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
Must possess an associate degree or higher and two (2) or more years of supervisory work experience.
Ability to work a flexible and on-call schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK: Frequent navigation of library property and ability to perform office-related functions, including extended computer use. Work may include prolonged standing, stooping, bending, and lifting/moving materials. The Safety Manager works onsite between the two Library locations.
SUPERVISION: Under the general direction of the Executive Director or designee, the Library Safety Manager performs work with a significant degree of independence. This is an onsite position that serves two library locations, requiring regular presence at both sites to ensure the effective management of safety, community care, and development initiatives. The employee works closely with City officials and Library staff at all levels of the organization. Performance is evaluated annually.
PUBLIC CONTACT: The employee has significant contact with other department employees, supervisors, contractors, consultants, outside vendors and dealers to resolve problems and improve safety and security.
