The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library at the University of Virginia is seeking a dynamic and collaborative librarian to join our Research and Data Services team. This role will focus on supporting UVA Health's research community by providing guidance on best practices in information retrieval, research data management, and data sharing.

This position will enable faculty, staff, and students to navigate the evolving landscape of scholarly communication, including open science initiatives, new publishing models, and emerging technologies such as generative artificial intelligence.

Primary Responsibilities

Data Management: Develop and implement library services related to research data management, addressing topics such as recommended practices for data organization, use of electronic lab notebooks, documentation, and reproducibility. Provide consultations and guidance on data management plan development and sharing in compliance with funder requirements. Work closely with faculty, researchers, librarians, and other research support providers to integrate research data management and sharing practices into the research lifecycle. Guide researchers and students in incorporating emerging technologies, such as generative AI, into their research processes.

Scholarly Communication: Inform researchers of open access initiatives such as FAIR and advocate for open data practices. Assist authors with assessing journals for quality and open access characteristics for manuscript submission. Stay current with developments in scholarly communication, including emerging technologies and new publishing models.

Research Impact: Assist individual researchers and teams in tracking publications and demonstrating impact utilizing research impact indicators, bibliometrics, and digital identifiers such as ORCID. Monitor current practices and evolving trends around research impact and maintain awareness of approaches and resources for assessment.

Additional Responsibilities Contribute to the library's public services as a member of the Health Sciences Library's Mission Team. Provide literature search services, create web-based guides and other materials to enhance the visibility of library services and resources, and participate in collection development. Additional roles could include participation in library outreach and marketing, literature search strategy development for systematic and other reviews, and /or creation of services to support use of emerging technologies such as generative AI to advance research, teaching, and learning.

Serve as the primary point of contact for library communication with faculty, staff, and student researchers in the UVA School of Medicine's Biomedical Sciences departments.

Participate in library-wide initiatives including strategic planning and engage in creative thinking to devise innovative library services.

Seek educational opportunities and professional development activities to support job responsibilities and enhance knowledge of the health sciences research environment and participate in regional and/or national professional organizations related to academic librarianship and liaison role.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS The position is eligible for job profiles Librarian I, II, or III based on an evaluation, in collaboration with University Human Resources, of education, research, teaching, and level of scholarly work.

Education: Master's degree in Library Science from ALA Accredited program or relevant graduate degree. Experience equivalency substitution (per Department of Labor Equivalency Guidelines): Bachelor's + 4 Years relevant experience considered in lieu of degree. Experience: 0-4 years experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Understanding of the research lifecycle and data-related needs of biomedical researchers.
  • Previous professional experience at an academic library.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of biomedical information resources and tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
