The James Blackstone Memorial Library is seeking an enthusiastic Reference Librarian to join our Adult Reference team. As Reference Librarian, you’ll engage with patrons at our busy service desk, foster connections in a welcoming environment, and help our community learn, succeed, and thrive by providing essential access to information, resources, and unique shared experiences.

The ideal candidate is creative and flexible, customer-service oriented, and a collaborative team player. The Reference Librarian must have strong technology skills, plus excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Duties:

  • Provides reference and information assistance (including readers’ advisory and tech help) in person, by phone, and electronically.
  • Participates on collection development team for non-fiction and reference collections, maintaining assigned section; including weeding, purchasing, and catalog maintenance.
  • Troubleshoots library IT system working with LION.
  • May work with Branford History collection and digitize local collection.
  • Other duties or special projects as assigned, including programming support, cataloging, and mending.

Education and skills: This position requires a Master’s degree in Library Science or Library Information Science from an accredited program. Significant progress toward MLS combined with relevant experience will be considered. The person in this position must be able to relate effectively and courteously to library patrons and co-workers and be an effective team player. Knowledge of library resources, computer resources, and community resources is preferred. The ability to multi-task and think quickly is also required. Physical strength and dexterity are required to handle library items and boxes up to 40 pounds in weight, and to transport loaded book carts. This position reports directly to the Associate Librarian for Reference Services & Technology.

Hours: 40 hours per week, full-time, non-exempt position with a generous benefits package, including medical, dental, and paid time off. Includes daytime, evening, and weekend shifts. Compensation range: $24-26/hour, depending on experience.
