Join an award winning Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library has an onsite 20 hour/week, part-time** Public Desk Assistant **position open. The vital role of the Public Desk Assistant is providing customer service at the Reference desk, assesses and fulfills patrons’ needs for information and materials, assists in delivering programs, and maintains departmental procedures and policies. Hours are as follows and requires flexibility.

  • Mondays 8:15am – 12:15pm

  • Tuesdays 8:15am – 12:15pm

  • Wednesdays 8:15am – 12:30pm

  • Thursdays 8:15am – 12:30pm

  • Fridays 8:30am-1:00pm

  • 1st Sunday of the month 11:30am – 5:00pm, with an additional 5th Sunday on rotation

OR

  • Mondays 12:45pm – 5:30pm

  • Tuesdays 12:45pm – 5:30pm

  • Wednesdays 12:45pm – 5:30pm

  • Thursdays 12:45pm – 5:30pm

  • 4st Sunday of the month 11:30am – 5:00pm, with an additional 5th Sunday on rotation

The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. Starting pay is $16.06-$20.09, based on skills and qualifications.

Position Summary:

The Public Desk Assistant is responsible for providing customer service at the Reference desk, assesses and fulfills patrons’ needs for information and materials, assists in delivering programs, and maintains departmental procedures and policies. This position requires good organizational and communication skills and the flexibility and training to move from task to task in a team environment. Specific responsibilities will be assigned by the supervisor on the basis of experience, skills, and specific needs of the department and number of hours worked.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides reference services to patrons at the public service desk.
  • Assists in delivering classes and programs to meet community needs.
  • Assists in providing technology and equipment assistance to patrons.
  • Handles financial transactions and maintains cash drawer.
  • Sets up equipment for library programs and public meetings.
  • Maintains printers in Reference Department and replace toners upon request for Central Library.
  • Keeps apprised of Library programs, policies and procedures and building layout to assist patrons most effectively.
  • Participates in relevant training, continuing education and/or professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent knowledge and skill in areas related to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Customer service experience is required.
  • Knowledge of eBooks and reference resources.
