**Patron Services Assistant **

Under the supervision of the patron services supervisor, the patron services assistant is responsible for providing excellent customer service to all library patrons. They staff two public service desks and the Call Center.

Schedule: Part-time, 16 hours

  • Mondays 5pm-9pm
  • Wednesdays 5pm-9pm
  • Thursdays 1pm-5pm
  • Fridays 1pm-5pm 

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certification)

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • At least one year of experience in a customer service position

  • Basic computer and telephone skills and familiarity with technology such as smart phones, tablets, and Kindles and other electronic devices
  • Basic troubleshooting of downloadable materials, such as downloadable books and streaming services like Hoopla and Kanopy offered through the library
  • Strong teamwork skills 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some college education
  • Experience working in a library environment

Preferred Competencies:

  • Multilingual skills in English plus another language(s) relevant to the Skokie community

Essential Functions:

  • Greet patrons in a friendly manner
  • Answer basic informational questions in person and via phone 
  • Sign patrons up for new library cards
  • Check in/out materials
  • Coach patrons in use of automated services
  • Handle renewal of materials and other basic circulation inquiries
  • Handle patron concerns
  • Engage patrons in light conversation around books, movies, and other collection items
  • Roving the floor to assist patrons
  • Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance

Other Functions:

  • May serve on library committees
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Work may include prolonged standing, stooping, bending, squatting, reaching, lifting materials that weigh up to 15 pounds, pushing full book carts that weigh up to 150 pounds, getting down on the floor, as well as climbing onto step stools to reach higher shelves as well as frequent computer use.

  • Manual dexterity, clear speech, hearing acuity, and correctable vision needed

  • Ability to navigate throughout the building

  • Noise level is generally moderate

  • Scheduling may require availability during any library operating hours, including days, evenings, and weekends. Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the library may require scheduling changes and flexibility.

  • Employee is required to park in designated area
