The Ball State University Libraries is searching for a talented and knowledgeable collaborator to build out support for and implementation of Open Education Resources (OER) and a variety of open access scholarship material as our Open Content and Affordable Learning Librarian. This position helps advance the Textbook Affordability initiative at Ball State and is essential to identifying key open access resources for existing and new course delivery methods such as Coursera and Lifetime Learning where openly accessible resources are key to avoiding copyright infringements. Position Function

Provide consultative, instructional, and outreach services to promote faculty, student, and staff engagement with Open Educational Resources, Open Access scholarship, and course reserve services; actively participate in University initiatives relevant to emerging models of scholarly communication and affordable learning; advance strategic partnerships with university stakeholders related to course material affordability initiatives; support an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative work environment and service culture to advance the strategic direction of the University Libraries.

Minimum Education

MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program or other relevant degree at time of appointment.

Minimum Experience

Experience related to Open Educational Resources, Open Access, or open pedagogy

Minimum Other

Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to collaborate with colleagues in an academic setting

Authorization to work in the US Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Education

Certification in, or familiarity with, Creative Commons licensing, open licensing, and fair use copyright concepts

Preferred Experience

Experience designing, implementing, and marketing academic library services; experience planning and implementing instructional sessions and workshops; experience with institutional repositories

Preferred Other

Knowledge of trends, standards, and literature relevant to open access initiatives in academic settings

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ranking: 1 Provide consultative services to advance University community's engagement with Open Educational Resources, working with collaborators to identify and assess relevant OER and providing consultation regarding opportunities to publish, reuse, or revise open resources.
  • Ranking: 2 Provide instructional sessions, workshops, and consultative services and advance collaborations with Libraries' liaisons and subject experts on topics including Open Educational Resources, Open Access publishing, open data, open licensing, and course reserves/Reading Lists; serve as functional liaison to all of campus to actively develop professional relationships to promote the integration of affordable course materials into the university curriculum and guide faculty, staff, and students in the appropriate selection and use of these materials.
  • Ranking: 3 Collaborate with Copyright and Scholarly Communications Manager to provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students regarding open licensing and fair use of course materials; collaborate with Libraries' course reserves staff to advance the promotion of Reading Lists for the delivery of affordable course materials.
  • Ranking: 4 Collaborate with Copyright and Scholarly Communication Manager to develop and provide inclusive educational programming for faculty, staff, and students to increase awareness and literacy in areas including innovative and evolving scholarly communications models, the economics of scholarly publishing, open access publishing opportunities, open educational resources, and Creative Common licensing.
  • Ranking: 5 Participate in the development and application of assessment methodologies to measure impact and inform decision support related to OER, OA, and related library initiatives.
  • Ranking: 6 Actively participate in and positively contribute to the activities of the Libraries, university, and profession through such opportunities as related professional organizations, presentations, committee service, publication, etc.; keep abreast of professional literature and scholarly developments in areas of specialization and pursue opportunities for relevant professional development.
  • Ranking: 7 Perform other related duties as assigned.
