The State of New Hampshire's State Librarian is responsible for overseeing all operations of the State Library. This individual reports to the Commissioner of the N.H. Department of Natural & Cultural Resources (DNCR) and, after the Governor's nomination and an affirmative vote of the Executive Council, serves as an unclassified employee for a specified period of time (4 years).

The State Librarian is part of the management team of the DNCR. This individual serves as the public face of the State Library and, working with the library’s management team, is responsible for the overall management of the Library and its programs.

The duties of New Hampshire's State Librarian – also known as the director of libraries – include but are not limited to:

--Managing staff, including recruiting, hiring, training, developing job responsibilities and performing performance reviews

--Collaborating with elected officials, State of New Hampshire agency personnel, library industry professionals, partner organizations, community groups and individuals on library matters

--Developing and maintaining the N.H. State Library collection

--Overseeing budgetary and fiscal responsibilities

--Maintaining current knowledge of new developments in the library field

--Establishing goals and measuring accomplishments against recognized standards

--Supervising, developing and enforcing all State Library-related procedures and policies

--Directing public information programs to promote and publicize the State Library in New Hampshire, the region and nationally

Education/Experience:

-Ten years working in a public library, at least five of which in a supervisory capacity

--Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree

--Experience managing budgets and grants

--Outstanding communications and people management skills
