Position Description The Metadata Archivist is responsible for creating, maintaining, and enhancing descriptive metadata for Center for the History of Medicine, Countway Library, collections, including institutional records, manuscript collections, objects and artifacts, and published materials, and provides guidance and support for metadata creation and management across systems in use at the Center to optimize digitization and discovery, including ArchivesSpace, Alma/HOLLIS, the Dataverse, the Digital Repository Service (DRS), Omeka, and The Museum System (TMS). Under the supervision of the Collections Services Archivist, the Metadata Archivist develops policies, procedures, workflows, and data mappings to support efficient metadata creation for various types of resources in a variety of content management systems and ensures the ongoing management, enrichment, and portability of this metadata. This position also advises and provides metadata support for Center initiatives, including digitization efforts, grants, curation and management of research data managed in a special collections or repository environment, and web archiving. The Metadata Archivist also contributes to the Collections Services program through the arrangement and description of unique digitized archival records and manuscript collections of all sizes and formats, and museum collection objects and digital images, including large mixed-format and born-digital collections, using appropriate-level processing strategies to ensure their accessibility, use, and preservation. In this capacity, the Metadata Archivist will: devise and implement processing plans, screen collections for sensitive materials; prepare and update access tools such as finding aids and catalog records for archival and manuscript holdings in accordance with national and local standards; and prepare original and copy cataloging of printed collections, including rare books, pamphlets, gray literature, and ephemera managed in a special collections environment according to professional standards. The Metadata Archivist will, in addition: supervise interns and less-than-half-time (LHT) staff as needed; serve as a member of relevant Harvard Library governance committees and/or working groups; participate in departmental and library-wide planning activities; actively seek opportunities for collaboration with other Countway departments or institutions; and undertake special projects as assigned. The successful candidate is expected to actively contribute to and engage with the archival profession.
Basic Qualifications
