The Dayton Metro Library is recruiting a full-time Main Library Manager to work at our beautiful, flagship location in downtown Dayton, Ohio.  Completely renovated and updated in 2017, our Library offers unique meeting spaces and amenities, such as a Green Screen Room.  The successful candidate will focus on connecting the Main Library to the community by overseeing the development of innovative and community-focused services and programs. The Main Library Manager supervises five managers who oversee Information Services, Special Collections, Youth Services, Patron Services and Community Development. Essential Job Duties 

  • Establishes and implements goals and objectives for the Main Library that support the Library’s Mission.
    Directs all public services of the Main Library such as reference assistance, readers’ advisory, outreach, circulation, and programming. Ensures that customer service is a top priority for all Main Library staff members.  
  • Directly hires, trains, supervises, schedules, coaches, and evaluates direct reports at the Main Library. Oversees volunteers.   Ensures proper staffing at assigned customer service points. Serves as liaison between Public Services Director and staff. Communicates with the administrative team on policy, patron, and staffing issues. 
  • Ensures the efficient, effective, customer service-oriented delivery of services to Library patrons. Maintains a current knowledge of Library operations, policies, and procedures.  Demonstrates and models excellent internal and external customer service.  A minimum of 10-20% of work time is spent at a public service point.
  • Meets with direct reports regularly. Provides and directs the vision for Main Library departments and activities.  Ensures the collaboration of Main Library departments. Analyzes requests and problems and presents recommendations to Public Services Director.  
  • Oversees the evaluation, development and maintenance of the Main Library’s collections of print, non-print, electronic materials, and information resources.  Collaborates with Technical Services to ensure the collection is responsive to community’s information, recreational, and educational needs.
  • Promotes community awareness of the Library and establishes effective communication and partnerships with community groups, organizations, and individuals.  
  • Prepares annual Main Library public services budget requests and submits quarterly, topical, and other reports as requested.
  • Monitors facility needs, initiates maintenance and repair of building, equipment, and grounds in cooperation with the Facilities Director.
  • Maintains a safe and secure facility for staff and patrons in conjunction with the Safety and Protective Services Director.
  • Implements Library policies and procedures at the department level.  Participates in policy revision and in the formulation of policies and procedures. Interprets Library policies to staff with a patron-responsive management perspective.
  • Assists with system-wide decision making through consistent information sharing and regular attendance at Managers’ and Public Service Managers’ meetings. Must serve on at least one DML committee. 


Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program preferred or a similar degree and/or experience in education, management, or social work is desired.
  • Previous supervisory experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license, acceptable motor vehicle record, and continuous insurability required.  
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and oversee Library operations and personnel. 
  • Ability to develop programs and services to meet community needs. 
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with community officials, leaders, organizations, the public and the staff.   
  • Ability to present information and respond to questions from staff, patrons, and members of the community individually and in a group setting.  Ability to deal effectively with confrontational individuals and/or challenging situations. 
  • Schedule includes day time, evening, and Saturday hours. 

Compensation and Benefits:  Salary is negotiable starting at $74,853 annually.  Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance along with paid time off and OPERS retirement.
