Description

The Mansfield Library invites applications for a Library Technician II to join their team. Situated within the Reference and Instruction service area, the Reference Technician contributes to multiple functional areas including reference services operations; project assistance to faculty librarians; and supervision of student employees for the Reference and Instruction service area. The Reference Technician primarily works on-site at the Mansfield Library on the Mountain Campus and occasionally at the Payne Family Library at Missoula College. The position is situated within an integrated Information and User Services unit which contains several cross-trained service areas.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Exercise independent judgment in responding to patron inquiries or complaints and aids patrons in locating information resources, including providing research assistance that requires extensive and complex consultation of information resources, and provides policy clarification.
  • Manage the reference desk, including scheduling and organizing service area meetings, maintaining online guides, overseeing document organization on SharePoint, and managing the physical reference and student workspaces.
  • Hire, onboard, train, supervise and mentor student reference employees, as well as evaluate student performance, recommend pay increases, implement disciplinary action and recommend termination when needed.
  • Provide project assistance to professional librarians; maintain and organize collection resources as needed; and assist other library personnel with various tasks related to social media, communications, and outreach.Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalency.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; listen, write, and speak with confidence and knowledge.
  • Knowledge of changing information environment encompassing new technologies, information resources, and expanding services.
  • Working knowledge of computer hardware and software basics, including Microsoft Office Suite, desktop publishing, and current Web technologies and the ability to learn new software.
  • Ability to determine appropriate resources based upon analysis of user's information needs and to appropriately refer inquiries to librarians and other colleagues for advanced or specialized queries.
  • Ability to provide detailed, accurate, and courteous service; demonstrated concern for satisfying external and/or internal customers.
  • Ability to multitask and to handle changing conditions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment across multiple functional areas of the library.
  • Time management skills; ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks; attention to detail; willingness to answer responsibility for successful and timely completion of special projects as assigned.
  • Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Ability to search and manipulate bibliographic databases and to evaluate, analyze, and interpret bibliographic data for the user; answer questions from a diverse population that may require extensive and complex consultation of standard resources and multiple communication methods and styles.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Supervisory experience.Additional Information

Position Number: 075000 Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday, varied. Probationary Period: Six (6) months minimum
