Position Summary:

Help ensure that students, faculty and staff can fulfill their curricular and research needs by delivering assistance and referral for all types of help. Assist patrons to locate, check out and use various types of library materials, resources, and equipment. Maintain the circulation database by updating patron files and holding records for materials. Borrow materials not available in the UNC Libraries for students, faculty and staff and lend materials requested by other libraries in a timely, cost-effective manner within the framework of state, national and international cooperative agreements and guidelines.

Job Duties:

(20%) Receive requests for materials from UNC patrons. Obtain requested materials by searching via the local catalog, Prospector, ILL system, OCLC, online databases and general internet searching; identifying correct bibliographic records; selecting owners of materials; and completing any missing citation information in the formal request. Process the incoming materials for online delivery or checkout and oversee student employees helping with such tasks.

(15%) Track progress of patron requests. Respond promptly to citation questions and problems, overdue notifications, delivery slowdowns, non-supplier notices, and requests requiring a rush response. Update ILL systems by editing unfilled and problem requests. Reconcile overdue and recalled materials. Update and maintain information in ILL system about patrons and lending libraries.

(15%) Provide UNC materials to other libraries through interlibrary loan by receiving requests, determining whether UNC owns the materials and in what format, completing or overseeing the pulling and processing of materials by student employees.

(15%) Update the department's interlibrary loan records and statistics by entering information about each loan in the ILL system to reflect the current status of the item. Complete billing procedures for loans that are not free or billed via automated processes. Bill for items that are lost.

(15%) Complete or supervise routine daily tasks at the main desk including check-in of materials, searching for paging and claims returned items, preparing overdue notices, and processing incoming and outgoing Prospector materials. Prioritize tasks and provide information for student employees as needed.

(15%) Provide assistance and referrals to patrons looking for all types of library and university help at the main desk. Provide circulation assistance including check-out and check-in, renewals, holds and other library account information. Provide information about services and equipment available. Provide assistance for patrons in access and use of online library resources. Provide basic reference assistance and refer more complex research questions to a librarian.

(5%) Serve as contact/building supervisor during night and weekend hours. Responsibilities include opening and closing the building. A User & Delivery Services staff member is available all hours the library is open to deal with unusual situations and at times is the only permanent staff member available.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis
