Library Specialist I - Circulation

Responsible for para-professional level support for the Library and related services. Provide customer centered services for faculty, students, and the general public by opening or closing library and checking library materials in & out using an automated system. Assists patrons in finding library materials they need. Instructs patrons in the use of the library computer systems, indexes, basic reference material, and online tools. Circulation track: Responsible for the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) interlibrary loan (ILL) sub-system: for the ordering, updating, processing, and tracking of loaned and borrowed materials from libraries worldwide. Process incoming Reserve collection materials to prepare them for shelving and circulation.

Examples of Duties - Essential Functions1.

Library Operations

• Open and closes library following established procedures
• Operates circulation desk
• Processes material returns, check-out material and pull hold requests
• Maintains patron database
• Responds to and assists students, employees, and the public
• Process library material in accordance with policy and procedure
• Participates in updating materials in library collection for currency, retention, and addition
• Assist in the training of student workers
• Manages incoming and outgoing inter-library loan (ILL) requests
• Support reserve collection maintenance

Screening Criteria1.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education - A High School Diploma or GED with some college courses, including coursework in office technology, typing, filing, and bookkeeping is required.
• Experience - A minimum of two years related library office work including use of computers is required.

Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Preferred Qualifications

• An Associate's Degree is preferred.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Core Competencies)

• Knowledge - Business English, composition, spelling, punctuation, arithmetic, office practices, inventory, and stock control. Basic working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office Suite® products. Knowledge of library systems and practices. Knowledge of including online databases is preferred.
• Skills - Verbal and written communication skills; computer skills including library specific databases and software.
• Abilities - Type 50 wpm; maintain confidential information; learn new technologies quickly; work with others in a team environment; communicate effectively and diplomatically with a diverse faculty, staff, student community; accept direction from supervisors; follow work rules and procedures; and accept constructive criticism. Work early and/or late hours and weekends.

• For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30-days of employment, and maintenance of an acceptable driving record are required.

• This position functions as an in-person work arrangement, working on-campus with either a set schedule or flexibility depending on operational needs.

• Manual dexterity and coordination are required for over half of the daily work period (about 70%) which is spent sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, 10-key, telephones, and other standard office equipment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires some mobility including the ability to move materials under 5 lbs. daily, 5-25 lbs. occasionally, and 25-60 lbs. rarely. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

• While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in an office environment. The employee is not exposed to hazardous conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and lighting is adequate.

Additional Posting Information

This is a Full-time Classified, 40 hour per week (100%) position in the Library Services department. Starting compensation is entry level for Group 4 on the 2024-25 Classified Wage Schedule.
