Under the supervision of the Security Services Lead, this position is responsible for guarding and protecting University and library property with a high intrinsic or monetary value. The Library Safety Officer will respond to and follow up on all issues within the library buildings. Acts as deterrent to criminal activity by routinely patrolling the library buildings. The incumbent must be able to work Sunday 12:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., and Monday through Thursday 3:15 pm to 12:15 am; must have the flexibility to cover day shifts, as needed due to scheduling issues. During the last week of instruction and finals, the incumbent will be called upon to work extended hours and consecutive days, including graveyard shifts.
Finalists will be asked to complete an incident report based on a hypothetical scenario as part of the interview process.
The full salary range for the Library Safety Officer is $20.32 - $26.28 per hour. However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $26.28 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

Minimum Requirements
Ability to read, understand, and implement written policies and procedures. Follow oral and written instructions and be able to write concise, logical reports on security incidents. Ability to remain calm and patient in order to handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy. Ability to organize work, establish priorities and meet deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni. Demonstrated ability to train safety personnel. Ability to work occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime, emergency call-back, and a flexible schedule as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to instruct others on best practices for dealing with emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities
DescriptionPercent Time
Prevention/Security Responsibilities: Actively patrols library buildings to provide protection of persons and property. While on foot patrol or assigned to a fixed post, will monitor for compliance to library and campus policies. In cases of non-compliance, advises patrons of the relevant policy and requests compliance utilizing a customer-centric approach. Requests assistance of appropriate authorities for escalated incidents following established guidelines. Immediately responds to active incidents within the library buildings and submits incident reports. Assists in the implementation of the security and emergency procedures of the library. Prevents unauthorized removal of university and library property from the premises. Responsible for opening, closing, and/or arming the library buildings according to established procedures. 75% Technical Responsibilities: Will provide assistance in hiring, training, and evaluating security student personnel. Notifies supervisor and other departments of adjustments and updates to the online calendar work schedule. Routinely monitors security student personnel by randomly conducting foot patrol checks, and reports personnel issues to supervisor. Assist in reviewing and updating procedures and training documents. Assist in producing step-by-step documentation for best practices to handle typical issues within the library for other staff to follow. Responsible for lost and found items. Maintains lost and found surplus and logs, and the proper disposable of items not claimed. Maintains and reports hourly patron and gate counts. 20% Services and Library Responsibilities: Provides general information to the public or refers them to the appropriate library staff on duty. Participates in staff meetings and committees as assigned. Monitors relevant electronic mailing lists and other formal communication mechanisms. 5%
