Nature of Work:

The purpose of the class is to provide paraprofessional, customer-oriented library services. The class is responsible for performing advanced bibliographic searches in intra-library loan, acquisition, or circulation functions and/or information services using all available library sources and tools; providing research and/or assistance in public service areas involving extensive public contact in advising patrons in the use and location of physical materials, online and digital resources, public computers, and mobile devices.

Essential Job Function

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Operates library computers for data entry and information retrieval.
  • Assists with planning and preparation of flyers, posters, and bibliographies for the library.
  • Participates in special civic and library events.
  • Staff service points to assist patrons in circulation, information, and reference activities, including Readers’ Advisory.
  • Performs troubleshooting tasks on computers and assists patrons with public computer and equipment use.
  • Assists the librarians with technology classes and programs.
  • Performs tasks related to digitizing and preserving material in the library’s special collections.
  • Assists patrons and staff with current technologies and applications, such as mobile devices, social media, etc.
  • Plans and coordinates the scheduling and borrowing of Book Club materials.
  • Conducts bibliographic searches for serials, periodicals, special collections, and print and non-print materials.
  • Assists librarians with aspects of collection development including selection, recommendations, and weeding.
  • Attends staff meetings to exchange information, and attends in-service training and technical classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical skills.
  • Performs related tasks such as managing desk, phone, and email inquiries, directing vendors and service technicians to the appropriate persons, and assisting with library projects.

Education/Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Requires a bachelor’s degree or associate degree. Public library experience preferred. Requires customer service experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Requires strong computer skills, and experience with Microsoft Office applications and mobile devices.

Special Certifications and Licenses refer to state, federal, or professional certifications or licenses required for entering or maintaining the job.

Requires a valid State of Florida driver's license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
