Louisville Free Public Library

Full-time

On-site

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, United States

December 1, 2024

Description

This post is for the branch manager of the Historic Western Library, located in Louisville, Kentucky. The Western Library, part of the Louisville Free Public Library system, represents a significant chapter in American history as the first library specifically for and operated by African Americans, opening its doors in 1905. Under the leadership of Reverend Thomas Fountain Blue, the library thrived as a vital resource for education and community empowerment within the African American population in Louisville. Reverend Blue's efforts not only involved directing the library but also included training Black librarians, thus creating pathways for future generations in a time of limited opportunities.

Today, the Western Library continues to honor its legacy as a custodian of Black history through its African American Archives, which preserve the stories and artifacts that reflect the cultural, social, and political contributions of African Americans in the area. This library is more than just a place of books; it serves as a living testament to the rich heritage of Louisville's Black community.
