Library Director

Knoxville, Iowa is a thriving vibrant city 35 miles southeast of Des Moines (pop. 7595). It has been recognized for its commitment to addressing housing developments for all income levels and infrastructure needs. Amenities include Lake Red Rock, the National Sprint Car Museum, and a 5-star rated hospital.

Due to a planned retirement, the Knoxville Public Library is seeking to hire a Library Director. The library was expanded and renovated in 2019 into a beautiful modern facility of 18,280 sf. An outdoor space with a stage was added in Fall 2024 for programming purposes.

Main duties: Under general supervision of the Knoxville Public Library Board of Trustees plans, coordinates, supervises and participates in the operation of the Knoxville Public Library according to local, state and federal directives. Responsible for all operations of the library and maintaining the budget. Works with the staff and Board members to formulate future plans for the library, develop policies, plan programs and provide services to the community.

Cooperates with County, Regional, and State libraries to promote services and programs. Supervises library staff of 3 FT, 13 PT employees including volunteers.  

Minimum Education or Experience Required

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university and one to two years related experience and/or training.

Preferred Education or Experience Required

Master’s degree in Information Science (MLIS). Library experience as librarian, department head, or assistant director with supervisory experience preferred.

Other Requirements – Certificates/Licensures

· Maintain the State Library of Iowa Endorsement certification by meeting CEU requirements.

· Bondable.

· Meet City residency requirements (30-mile radius).

Full-time position with benefits through the City of Knoxville: vacation and sick days, IPERS, health insurance. Salary range: $68K – 78K.
