Library Director  The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library seeks a library director to strengthen the library through public relations, strategic direction, and day-to-day management with solid librarianship.  The Library has an operational budget of just over $1.4M that provides services to 28,000 Alpena County residents. This newly renovated Class V library is located in the beautiful harbor town of Alpena, mere blocks from Lake Huron in Northeast Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The Library offers robust community programming in a wide variety of formats and houses the George R. and Edith Angell Cook Special Collections (maritime, local history, and genealogy).   

Alpena, Michigan is the Sanctuary of the Great Lakes, boasting four seasons of activities such as cross-country skiing, fishing, diving, bird-watching, hiking, boating, biking, and more. This is a full-time, salaried position with an annual starting salary of $80,000 to 90,000 based on experience, with a generous benefits package of health insurance, paid time off and participation in the Michigan Municipal Employee Retirement System.  

Qualifications: Must meet and maintain the requirements set by the Library of Michigan for a Class V library (Level 1 Certificate), MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution, 4-5 years of management experience in a public library setting, Michigan Librarian I certification, up-to-date with current issues and trends in libraries, and familiarity with small-town libraries. The candidate must possess excellent interpersonal written and verbal communication skills, must excel at building and strengthening relationships in the community, and relationships with the staff, have excellent attention to detail, and be able to develop and manage the operating budget.

Dedicated to serving as a regional gathering place for learning and quality cultural experiences, the Library also acts as a primary resource for historical research, enrichment opportunities, and educational support. The Library is committed to building a reading community while providing quality humanities programming unique to this area of the state.
