The Garfield Free Public Library is looking for an innovative and experienced Library Director to guide our institution in providing outstanding services to our vibrant and diverse community. As part of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS), we are dedicated to offering an extensive range of resources and programs to fulfill the educational, informational, and recreational needs of our patrons. The Director will oversee all aspects of library administration, including managing an annual budget exceeding $1,000,000, supervising staff and facilities, and directing the library's collections, services, and programs. We seek a motivated and visionary leader who is eager to tackle immediate challenges such as recruiting staff, enhancing the collection, expanding programming, introducing new services, and increasing community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all library operations, including strategic planning, policy development, and implementation in alignment with the library's mission and goals.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and efficient allocation of resources.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate library staff, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Serve as the primary representative of the library to the community, building partnerships with local organizations, schools, and stakeholders to enhance library services.
  • Oversee the creation and execution of diverse programs and services that cater to all age groups, promoting literacy and lifelong learning.
  • Ensure the library's physical and digital spaces are welcoming, accessible, and well-maintained.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in library management, including at least three years in a supervisory role.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and organizational abilities.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency in current library technologies and digital resources.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in library services.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working within a consortium library system.
  • Knowledge of New Jersey library laws and regulations.
  • Grant writing and fundraising experience.
