Overview

The Library Collections Specialist (LCS) is an integral member of the Collections Services Team (CST) and will contribute to a wide range of detail-oriented tasks supporting Special Collections in Firestone Library.  This position will report to the Collection Services Supervisor while working closely with colleagues throughout Special Collections and the Library.

The LCS position focuses on providing intellectual and physical collection support and will work on a variety of tasks such as, but not limited to, processing new acquisitions and donations, cataloging support, initiating and executing collection-based projects, organizing data creation and cleanup, and working on other special projects promoting access to the collections. In addition, the position will help support environmental monitoring, space management and facilities maintenance efforts in the department.  The LCS works closely with units across Special Collections, including the Archival Description and Processing Team (ADAPT), Curatorial Services, Preservation and Conservation, and Public Services.  The LCS will also work with library departments such as Library Finance & Acquisition Services, Cataloging and Metadata Services (CAMS) and others. This position provides a broad introduction to the world of Special Collections librarianship.

This position may encounter dust and mold in the course of their duties.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and execute collection services tasks and projects such as acquisitions processing, cataloging and description, research, conservation and preservation efforts, digital projects, exhibitions, environmental monitoring, facilities support and other special projects
  • Make complex and nuanced decisions to provide description, access, and collection management services for the department.
  • Use a variety of cataloging systems, Microsoft Suite applications, Google Drive, and other technological tools in support of collections management
  • Promote and practice department-wide policies and procedures regarding handling of rare materials and security protocols
  • Train and supervise student workers to help in basic collections management work.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Highly organized with exceptionally strong attention to detail
  • Advanced skills and experience with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new technologies
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to engagement with a diverse population of students, faculty, colleagues, alumni, and patrons and colleagues outside the university
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage and focus on multiple priorities in a dynamic environment with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a library and/or handling rare materials
  • Familiarity with Alma (or an equivalent integrated library system) and library cataloging principles
  • Familiarity with ArchivesSpace (or an equivalent collection management system) and archival description principles
  • Reading and/or writing skills in a non-English language.
