The Town of Needham is seeking passionate individuals for the part-time position of Library Circulation Assistant at the Needham Free Public Library. Reporting to the Library Circulation Supervisor, the Library Circulation Assistant will support in a patron-facing capacity, assisting in providing information and processing library checkouts and other services. The ideal candidate will have a strong administrative or support background, excellent communication skills, and a passion for serving the Needham community.

It is an exciting time to join the Needham Free Public Library team! Our new Strategic Plan for FY2023-2027 positions the library to continue to meet the community’s needs for years to come. In addition, our recent Library Space Utilization Study reimagines the library’s interior space in four phases to enhance the work we do for our patrons and the community. Along with diverse collections, plentiful programming, and great services, the Needham Free Public Library is on track to be the go-to place for new and current library workers.

Anticipated Work Schedule: Wednesdays: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Fridays: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Week One and Three of each month, Saturdays: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  Week One of each month, Sundays: 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. (1:00 - 5:00 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day)

CON #25014 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with library patrons; assisting them with information and/or directing them to appropriate locations or staff
  • Process library checkouts, renewals, returns, reserves, fines, registrations
  • Maintain orderliness of materials collection
  • Perform other circulation procedures as required

Qualifications

The following requirements may be substituted by any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job:

  • Extensive technical or specialized training such as that which would be acquired by an Associate’s Degree or two years of technical or business school.
  • At least one year of experience, preferably in a library setting.
  • Excellent customer service skills and capacity to interact effectively and tactfully with the general public.
  • Familiarity with computers with the ability to perform detailed work accurately and efficiently.
  • Capability to adapt to new technologies as required.
  • Capability of standing for long stretches as well as bending, lifting up to 45 lbs., and pushing book carts loaded with books.
