Job Overview

Under general supervision, perform advanced level library support activities, which require a comprehensive knowledge of bibliographic principles and library procedures, policies and tools. Interpret policies and procedures on a routine basis; make exceptions when necessary. Provide an advanced level of excellent quality public and/or technical services, including assist library patrons resolve issues, negotiate positive outcomes in potentially contentious situations, discovery of library materials in digital or physical formats and provide live chat services and monitor main email account and refers users to subject librarians when appropriate. Must assist management or oversee a core function within a unit/department, with or without student supervisory duties.

The Library Associate 3 Langsam Evening/Weekend Service Coordinator position functionally serves as building supervisor on weekend/evening shifts; opens the library building and service point; troubleshoots questions and problems relating to circulation/fulfillment, reference and research, facilities, building safety, the library catalog, library databases, library equipment, and library computer network; and address other issues as they arise in accordance with library policies and procedures. The position is also responsible for OhioLINK fulfillment and coordinate fine and replacement payments and management of the Langsam Library stacks.

Essential Functions

  • Provide advanced level of public service to library patrons.

  • Participate in instruction programs.

  • Assist with the development of instruction materials.

  • Answer complex reference questions.

  • Utilize and demonstrate discipline specific databases which require an in-depth knowledge of subject areas; exercise considerable judgment in developing appropriate search strategies.

  • Assists with outreach and library promotion.

  • Provide advanced level of technical service relative to library operations and materials.

  • Orders library material in all formats.

  • Receive library material in all formats.

  • Resolve problems with vendors regarding duplicate shipments, unfilled orders, licensure, unordered materials, complex claims, invoicing, and access issues.

  • Perform copy cataloging that requires addition of call number, subject headings, and notes.

  • Resolve complex serials problems: title changes and mergers, numbering problems, ceased or inactive titles, and/or change in format.

  • Provide non-routine authority verification.

  • Works with basic to intermediate metadata.

  • Uses a variety of tools and databases to compile, analyze and report data.

  • Conduct evaluation of damaged general collection materials and determines the proper treatment based on established conservation and lab standards.

  • Perform intermediate to advanced repairs on general collection materials using the established lab instructions/procedures.

  • Under the supervision of the conservator, perform intermediate to advanced repairs on special collection materials following approved conservation standards and best practices.

  • Train and mentor volunteers to perform simple to intermediate repairs on general collection materials.

  • May provide general supervisory support to the department. Assist management or oversee a core function within a unit/department, with or without student supervisory duties.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of new operating policies and procedures.

  • Coordinate the staffing for the unit and for projects.

  • Monitor and report on the department/unit's annual budget for student workers.

  • Analyze statistics and workload data to make projections to determine appropriate staffing needs.

  • Compile statistics and maintains records.

  • Set workflow projections; coordinate volume and workflow with other units.

  • Serve as lead worker. Review the work of support staff for accuracy and completeness.

  • Trains/instructs other staff.

  • Create training/procedural documentation.

  • Identify benchmarks for quality control (e.g., error rate, service standard, production rate).

  • Assist with budget preparation by gathering data and information. Maintain budget records and accounts, audit, monitor and approve limited expenditures.

  • Perform departmental personnel functions for student assistants (e.g., process forms, maintain employee and department personnel files, coordinate departmental recruitment process, prepare and process payroll).

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent. At least three years of work experience in a library or comparable environment OR nine graduate level credit hours in Library or Information Science or in a relevant subject area and at least two years of relevant work experience. Experience with relevant software packages and/or technologies may be required. Some positions may require at least one year of supervisory experience and/or the knowledge of a foreign language.

Required Experience

Minimum two (2) two years of relevant work experience. Experience with relevant software packages and/or technologies may be required. Some positions may require at least one year of supervisory experience and/or the knowledge of a foreign language.

Additional Qualifications Considered

Three years of customer service experience.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, particularly Teams, Excel and SharePoint.

Professional writing and communication skills in print, digital and virtual environments.
