  • Library Assistant I (public services) 
  • Salary Range: $20.00-$22.00 hourly 
  • Full-Time, Non-exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • Fully Onsite Position in Hayward, CA

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide courteous, efficient assistance in using library services to affiliated customers and visitors.
  • Listen for patron needs and refer suggestions to the Learning Commons director.
  • Check materials in and out, shelve reserve materials, and perform other tasks at the circulation desk.
  • Perform the full range of circulation procedures primarily using the automated circulation system. 
  • Handle customer service issues and suggestions. 
  • Receive and fulfill requests for interlibrary loan and document delivery.
  • Monitor messages in the library’s email accounts and refer to colleagues as appropriate.
  • Create calendars and other signage in digital and print formats.
  • Operate a variety of office and library equipment and demonstrate basic operations to library users. 
  • Demonstrate optimal use of online catalog to patrons.
  • Assist in maintaining a neat appearance of the library..
  • Assist with inventory of collections.
  • Assist with training student work study assistants.
  • Compile usage statistics for electronic resources.
  • Contribute to improving workflow and documentation associated with responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree is a plus
  • Two years of equivalent experience in a customer service environment.
  • Prefer one year of library training at the paraprofessional level.
  • Ability to interact courteously with and respond effectively to library users’ concerns. 
  • Ability to understand and interpret library policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Ability to keep detailed, accurate records.
  • Ability to organize work in order to sustain progress on assigned tasks. 
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, or equivalent office software relevant to job responsibilities.
  • Ability and initiative to respectfully give and accept suggestions among colleagues.
  • Experience using resources of an academic library preferred.
