Position Summary
The Lavonia-Carnegie Library is hiring an individual committed to offering the best library service to our community, an individual who doesn’t settle for the ways it’s been done, but instead looks for ways to excel and improve. We seek an enthusiastic, innovative, and flexible individual who proactively searches for opportunities to make public library services relevant to all residents of Franklin County.
This part-time position provides front-line services to patrons in the library, performs other supportive duties, and develops and presents library programs for the public (currently children’s programs). This position requires dependability, tact, knowledge of library policies and procedures, significant independent judgment, a positive customer service attitude, and skill in program presentation. The ability to start, finish, or pick up work projects at various points, without direct supervision, is vital. Creativity, high energy, and ability to present to a group are essential. Position reports to the Branch Manager. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required, with college degree or college experience preferred. At least one year experience working with the public is required, with library experience and experience working with children preferred. A combination of education, training, and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered. Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills preferred.
Essential Job Functions
The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments may change in the future.
Provides direct customer service to library patrons, assisting with their information, readers’ advisory, and circulation needs. Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including (but not limited to) opening and closing the library; basic facility maintenance; organizing and re-shelving materials; accepting fees and fines; routing holds, loans and information; materials processing; recording statistics; performing basic office duties. Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures. Assists and instructs library patrons in computer activities, including using the library’s catalog and databases, the Internet, and basic personal computing programs. Develops, promotes, and implements library programs for children or other audiences, communicating all plans and program feedback to Branch Manager. Works with Branch Manager to plan for expanding Children’s Services in ways such as contacting schools and outreach activities. Creates attractive and informative bulletin boards and displays. Prepares print and online notices, flyers, monthly calendars, and other publicity information for approval by Branch Manager. Browses library literature, searches Galileo databases, and becomes otherwise familiar with materials related to library service to children. Assists with cleaning of library building.
Supervisory Responsibilities
May oversee operations of the library in the absence of the Branch Manager, being responsible for opening and closing the library. May train and oversee library volunteers as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing customer service to patrons of all ages, as well as to co-workers. Skill in public speaking and program presentation techniques appropriate to the targeted audiences. Knowledge of children’s, teen, and adult literature. Knowledge of basic library operational principles and practices and application of ARLS and branch policies, procedures, and activities. Effective communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with the public, co-workers and supervisor. Skill in using and understanding personal computers, programs, and the Internet for performing required duties and in assisting patrons with common computer applications and techniques. Organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize assignments and activities. Aptitude for creative projects such displays, crafts, decorations, and publicity. Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures. Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally. Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of medium work.
