This is professional library work coordinating and conducting library services and activities in a specific area such as Reference, Public Services, Technical Services, Youth Services or Adult Services. Work may be performed under the general supervision of the Library Director, Assistant Director, Branch Manager or other professional staff.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of the principles and methods of professional library service and operations, including automation, cataloging, reference and/or programming Knowledge of computer hardware, software and networked services as related to the library environment and of information resources in various forms, including electronic Knowledge of community resources, needs and interests Knowledge of the principles of organization, supervision and administration Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills as needed to work effectively with staff, volunteers and library users demonstrating the ability to work in a team environment Ability to plan and present programs and to train others effectively Self-motivated, flexible and adaptable to change Strong public service and professional commitment Demonstrates broad, in-depth, and up-to-date knowledge of reference resources
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Plans and coordinates the activities of a department, division, or service of the library system, carrying out objectives for assigned library service Participates in the planning and development of policies and budget and assists in evaluating programs, collections and services of assigned areas Uses various resources to assist staff and library users in locating information Coordinate, train and evaluate personnel assigned to the division or department Recommends acquisition of materials and equipment appropriate for the division or department collections to meet the needs of users within the mission of the library Collects and analyzes data and prepares reports, recommending service responses as needed Develops and implements programs and projects in areas of responsibility and develops training materials suitable for various ages and educational levels Assists or trains other library system staff, county department staff, and library users in use of department/division collections and equipment Represents the library system and cooperates with other community organizations in joint projects Keeps abreast of current developments in the field through programs of continuing education, professional reading and participation in professional organizations Required to work during a local declared state of emergency

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Primarily indoor library setting, but occasionally in other community locations.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS/DEMANDS: Acceptable eyesight and hearing (with or without correction) to safely perform duties.
Light (up to 15 pounds) lifting and carrying.
Walking, standing, bending, and stooping.

Education/Qualifications:
Minimum Training: MLS from an American Library Association accredited University. Two years of library experience, of which one year must be at the professional or post-MLS level. A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the above minimum qualification.
