Description

The Amarillo Public Library seeks a branch librarian for its Southwest Branch Library. Branch librarians manage day-to-day operations of a branch library. Their responsibilities include interviewing, training, supervising, and evaluating staff. They also plan and implement programs and services. Furthermore, the role involves ensuring proper maintenance of the branch and its collections, promoting services to the community, and maintaining relationships with community groups. Branch librarians ensure policies are followed, reports are completed, and that the branch meets both immediate and long-term service goals.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Successful candidates will be able to serve the public using the knowledge, skills, and abilities that follow: 

Knowledge 

  • In-depth understanding of library services, including collection development, community outreach, programming, and reader’s advisory.
  • Familiarity with both reference and youth services.
  • Good understanding of library policies and procedures such that they can be explained to others. 

Skills 

  • Strong organizational skills for managing workflows, scheduling staff, and delegating tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills for engaging with patrons, staff, and community groups.
  • Analytical skills for evaluating community needs and adapting services accordingly.
  • Strong customer service skills to assist patrons in accessing resources and utilizing library services. 

Abilities 

  • Ability to supervise and lead a team while ensuring a positive work environment.
  • Capable of long-term planning and managing budgets.
  • Able to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities efficiently,
  • Able to foster a cohesive branch environment while ensuring high-quality service delivery.


Requirements

REQUIRED AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus five years library management experience or comparable supervisory experience is required. A master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited library school and two years practical, professional experience in a recognized library is preferred. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires evening and some weekend work (two nights per week, alternating Fridays and Saturdays, and one Sunday every four weeks).  Candidates must be eager to serve the public courteously and be able to work tactfully and harmoniously with others. Full performance of duties requires physical stamina. Branch Librarians must walk briskly, stand for considerable periods of time, lift and carry stacks of books weighing up to 20 pounds, and push loaded book trucks for short distances – all of which requires agility in stooping, lifting, and bending.
