The Librarian I or Librarian II position will create, edit, load, and maintain bibliographic and item records in the integrated library system generated in-house and from vendors, ensuring that customers and staff have access to titles and items for browsing, placing holds, and checking out. This position supports all 22 locations at the Austin Public Library, including the Austin History Center. Additionally, this work provides up-to-date information for staff to use while ordering new titles, replacing titles, and analyzing the library’s collection. Responsibilities include performing retroactive cleanup tasks and working with the cataloging unit to create, document, and implement local rules.In addition, the candidate must be able to successfully collaborate with other library teams to ensure all levels of the customer (internal and external) experience are being taken into account. An aptitude for learning, evaluating, and adapting to meet the needs of the organization and community.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Librarian I

  • Graduation with a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university, or must be earned within six (6) months of employment.

Librarian II

  • Graduation with a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university, plus two (2) years of experience as a professional librarian.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Librarian I

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Provides in-depth reference services and reader's advisory to the public.
  2. Delivers excellent internal and external customer service.
  3. Compiles and updates user guides as needed.
  4. Creates, implements, and measures impact of public programming.
  5. Maintains assigned portion of collection and assesses collection on a regular basis.
  6. Provides instruction and classes in the use of technology, issues related to workforce and economic development, and literacy.
  7. Initiates and maintains contact with schools and with other individuals and groups serving youth in the community.
  8. Provides library tours and orientations and explains policies to public and staff. Provides training to other staff members.
  9. Collects, maintains, and prepares reports.
  10. Delivers library services through outreach.

Librarian II

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  1. Assists staff and public with use of electronic information sources, software, internet, and research databases.
  2. Delivers excellent internal and external customer service.
  3. Provides assistance/instruction on use of library facilities and resources. Conducts meetings, training sessions, and public educational programs. Provides training to other staff members.
  4. Evaluates collections of library materials and assesses collection per APL Collection Management policies and procedures.
  5. Works or travels to several locations to deliver programming and provides instruction and classes in the use of technology, issues related to workforce and economic development, and literacy.
  6. Creates, implements, and measures impact of public programs.
  7. Schedules, coordinates, and promotes library programming. Generates reports and statistics on programming, funding, and collection.
  8. Delivers library services through outreach and provides direct reference services to customers via in-person, telephone, email, and chat.
  9. Performs a variety of circulation or collection-related duties. Follows APL Security guidelines and procedures.
  10. Compiles bibliographies and updates user guides as needed. Performs original and copy cataloging. Resolves cataloging problems and maintains online public catalog.

Librarian II

Requirements

Preferred Skills/Knowledge/Qualifications: 

  • Experience performing original and copy cataloging, using MARC coding, RDA, LCSH, LCGFT, DDC, MarcEdit, OCLC Connexion, and current metadata practices.
  • Experience using an Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • Ability to problem-solve, using critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to pay close attention to details.
  • Ability to respond to internal and external customers providing up-to-date information.
  • Experience working in a large urban library system processing large volumes of materials along with the ability to prioritize daily work tasks.
