Reporting to the Librarian for Tozzer Library, the Librarian for American Indigenous Studies is responsible for supporting scholars engaged in American Indigenous Studies research and Indigenous communities utilizing Tozzer Library resources. This position engages in research and instruction activities, outreach and community building, collection development, and special collections projects.

Tozzer Library provides support to researchers in the fields of Anthropology and Indigenous Studies, as well as related fields. Founded in 1868, Tozzer Library houses extensive collections in these subject areas, including historic materials ranging from the 1500s to present day. Tozzer Library is actively expanding the scope of its services and collections through different initiatives such as the Indigenous Knowledge Collection, community events showcasing new scholarship, and more. Research, Teaching, and Learning

Provides specialized reference services to students, faculty, and tribal members focused on American Indigenous Studies topics, especially as they relate to Tozzer Library collections.

Plans and implements instruction programs aimed at Indigenous Studies scholars utilizing Tozzer Library resources.

Creates and maintains resources that support research such as LibGuides, newsletters, etc.

Outreach and Community Building

Serves as a liaison to the Harvard University Native American Program (HUNAP) and collaborates with other library liaisons to provide support for American Indigenous-focused courses.

Serves as one of the liaisons for tribal communities utilizing Tozzer Library resources. Participates in community outreach initiatives such as the annual Harvard Powwow.

Represents Tozzer Library and Harvard Library in regional, national, and international professional meetings and conferences such as the American Indian Library Association, the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries, and Museums, and the International Indigenous Librarians' Forum.

Collections

Engages in current and retrospective collection building (including marginalized and historically excluded voices) in all formats.

Manages acquisitions funds, approval plans, serials, and electronic resources with a focus on American Indigenous Studies.

Works closely with the Librarian for Tozzer Library on special collections projects such as Tozzer Library's Indigenous Knowledge Collection, digitization initiatives, fulfilling tribal requests, coordinating donations, and acquiring new materials.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLITIES_:_

Supervises student workers on projects as needed.

Contributes to the overall goals of the department as appropriate.

Ensures responsible financial management, tracking expenses, and following Harvard University's financial policies, procedures, and protocols. In partnership with HL Finance, ensure accountability and compliance with fiduciary requirements.

Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment.¿Basic Qualifications

Advanced degree in Library and Information Science or other relevant subject such as Indigenous Studies.

3-5 years of professional experience in libraries or related cultural heritage institutions.

Demonstrated knowledge of American Indigenous Studies topics, and experience providing services to Indigenous scholars and communities.Additional Qualifications and Skills

Frequently move boxes weighing up to 20 pounds across the library for various needs.Working Conditions

The position is based on site in Cambridge, MA. There may be the opportunity for a hybrid work model compliant with Harvard University policies.

It is anticipated that this role will be on campus three days a week, and have the option for remote the other days, dependent on business needs.

Work location is responsive and subject to change based on business needs. Requests for flexibility will be considered consistent with Harvard University flexwork policies.

At times will need to travel locally or more broadly.

At times may work in basements, attics, warehouses, and other records storage areas.

May interact with collections that may contain dust, mold, or other contaminants.

The work associated with this position is performed in a library/office setting.Additional Information

Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. The amount will vary based on the position and the candidate's relevant experience. Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only).Benefits
