POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Instructional Design Librarian will lead efforts to expand, extend, and enrich library instruction through digital and analog teaching materials, as well as contribute their expertise to programmatic information literacy instruction services. Using pedagogical and online teaching best practices, the Instructional Design Librarian will also collaborate with colleagues internal and external to the library to support student success and engagement through the integration of library instruction within courses and the broader curriculum. This includes ensuring accessibility of library instruction materials and making recommendations regarding educational technology purchase and use within the library. This opportunity is available to both experienced and qualified new graduates who have completed their degree by the end of the posting period.

Located an hour's drive to the east of Los Angeles, an hour west of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, an hour east of ocean beaches, ninety minutes north of San Diego, and an hour south of mountain ski resorts, UCR is located in an area of dramatic landscapes and rich cultural traditions. The UCR Library is a team of intensely collaborative, forward-thinking colleagues dedicated to providing excellent services to our students, faculty, and community members in a rapidly evolving information environment. The successful candidate will be technologically sophisticated; committed to problem-solving in local, regional, national, and international arenas; able to develop innovative solutions to complex problems; and a dynamic and effective leader.

The UCR Library is comprised of two facilities housing more than 3,800,000 volumes, 940,000 electronic books, 97,000 print and electronic journals, and 2,300,000 microforms. The Library provides services to more than 26,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and other academics in an institutional environment planning for and experiencing extensive growth. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of approximately 36 librarians, 65 staff personnel, and 90 part-time students, in building a research library of excellence within a dynamic and diverse university ranked among the top 50 in the nation. The UCR Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Among the unique collections of the UCR Library is the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Water Resources Collections & Archives, the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, the Paul Chou Collection of Chinese history and culture, the George Brown Papers, the Tomas Rivera Papers, and the Inland Empire Memories Initiative. The UCR Library is an integral part of the University of California library system. With collections totaling 30 million volumes, UC's more than 100 libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. In addition, UC's California Digital Library (CDL) provides the core of the University's digital collections. CDL also assists UC to share resources and holdings more effectively, and provides leadership in applying technology to the development of library collections and services. Organizationally situated within the UC Office of the President, the CDL operates in close collaboration with all UC campuses and their libraries.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and further develop the library's physical and digital learning services in alignment with department, library, and university strategic initiatives,
• Maintain awareness of the instructional design landscape to monitor evolving best practices and pedagogical methodologies,
• Serve as a local expert within the UCR Library on evolving instructional design pedagogies,
• Design and deploy synchronous and asynchronous learning objects in a variety of formats and for a variety of platforms, including online learning modules, videos, research guides, infographics, instructional materials, and other learning objects,
• Provide in-depth instructional design consultations for librarian and instructor colleagues,
• Cultivate relationships with University partners to raise awareness and increase use of library instructional materials,
• Make recommendations for and manage use of library educational technology resources,
• Provide general reference service support for students working on the information desk both virtually and in-person,
• Contribute to DigiRef, the UC-wide consortium virtual reference service,
• Participate in departmental instructional rotations, reference support, projects, and service development,
• Participate in assessment and other quality improvement activities,
• Participate in effective communications and engagement with appropriate stakeholders to maintain knowledge contribution to library collections and resources development,
• Collaborate with colleagues across the library and the campus on student engagement activities,
• Independently and collaboratively participate in ongoing professional development,
• In collaboration with the Director of Teaching and Learning, provides guidance and training to the Curriculum Development Student Assistant. May participate, hire and provide student evaluation for this student part- time position.

UC professional librarians are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining unit; The University Council-American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is in the bargaining unit.
Appointment at rank of Assistant Librarian to Librarian - Potential Career depending upon qualifications and experience. Advancement through the librarian ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every two to three years, each of which includes substantial peer review.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• ALA-accredited (MLIS, MLS etc.) degree or equivalent advanced degree.
• Experience developing web-based research guides or tutorials.
• One year experience providing instruction or reference services in an academic setting.
• Knowledge of or experience with instructional design concepts and/or educational technology.
• Familiarity with major educational technologies, including Instructure Canvas and Articulate.
• Ability to present information effectively in a variety of settings and modalities.
• Ability to provide excellent reference and instruction services in all formats for students and faculty in an academic library.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work creatively and effectively while promoting teamwork, diversity, equity, and inclusivity.
• Commitment to pedagogical professional development.

Preferred qualifications

• Three years' experience providing instruction or reference services in an academic setting.
• Demonstrated experience with the use of major educational technologies, including Instructure Canvas and Articulate.
• Awareness of accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
• Awareness of copyright issues as they relate to instructional design and deployment of educational materials.
