Description

Position Summary:  Responsible for management and direction of the operations and personnel of the Patron Services Department which includes, Adult Collection Services, Law Library, AV, Local History, ONEplace@kpl, Circulation, and Reference Services.  The Head of Patron Services is expected to provide leadership and vision for the department, instill high service standards, and administer the department resources in alignment with the Library’s strategic plan.  Reporting to the Library Director, the Head of Patron Services is a member of the library’s senior leadership team.  

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Leads departmental planning and sets specific service, collection, and program goals for each agency and develops effective evaluation methods for on-going assessment and reporting. Designs, monitors and evaluates service delivery; assesses appropriate staffing levels, analyzes patron needs and service patterns; monitors customer service quality; manages procedures for access and information delivery; develops and manages the implementation of special programs and initiatives.  Advises administration re. future development within Patron Services; assesses capital improvement, facility, equipment and security needs.

  2. Creates and supports an inclusive work environment that focuses on the personal and professional development of staff. Supervises librarians and support staff assigned to the Patron Services department; engages in selecting, training, counseling, and coaching; sets performance standards and maintains systems of accountability; conducts regular 1:1 meetings and performance evaluation of staff.

  3. Directs collection development, management, and maintenance activity for adult collections. Including:  reference, digital resources; periodicals; government documents; takes a leads role in patron requests for reconsideration of adult materials. Assesses and manages KPL’s status as a government documents depository;

  4. Prepares and monitors annual department budget to include analysis of operational expenses, funding of departmental goals, and evaluation of funding sources; conducts regular cost/benefit analyses.

  5. Serves as a community leader through establishment of external affiliations and partnerships on behalf of the library and monitors those of departmental staff; supports the promotion of services and collections within the library and within the community-at-large.

  6. Performs library-wide administrative duties; participates in senior management team meetings and other library committees as assigned; works collaboratively with other department heads and staff on library-wide matters; attends regular meetings of the KPL Board of Trustees and represents Library in other community meetings as requested by the Library Director. Serves as administrator on-call.

Salary 

$88,507 - $109,880 based on experience; Benefits include medical insurance, fully paid dental, vision, LTD, life insurance and defined contribution retirement plan. 

Schedule 
Full-time; exempt position 
Evening and weekends as needed.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A Master’s degree in library information science from an ALA-accredited program
  2. Five years of professional library experience, preferably in a public library, emphasizing public services.
  3. Three years of successful management/supervisory experience.
  4. Demonstrated commitment to valuing equity and contributing to an inclusive public service and work environment.
