If so, consider coming to work with us as a Facilities Custodian and join our Building and Grounds team. This is a part-time, 25 hours per week position. 

The work schedule is: 

  • 1:30pm-6:30pm Monday through Friday with some nights and a five week rotation for weekends

The Glenview Public Library makes the power of knowledge, information, and discovery accessible to all people. 

Under the supervision of Facilities Manager, the Facilities Custodian is responsible for a variety of duties related to the upkeep of the Library building, parking areas and grounds. This position performs janitorial/housekeeping duties, meeting room setups and provides assistance with department requests. The Custodian may also perform minor repairs and maintenance as assigned by the Facilities Manager on the basis of experience, skills, and specific needs of the department.

The pay range for this position is $20/hour to $22/hour depending on qualifications.   

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Monitors the operation of Library’s HVAC and other building systems and notifies supervisor of any significant issues.
  • Performs various cleaning and/or janitorial duties to maintain Library premises
  • Performs minor plumbing, painting, drywall, carpentry and miscellaneous repairs.
  • Prepares/sets up meeting rooms for programs and library events.
  • Maintains light fixtures by replacing bulbs, ballasts and performing other basic electrical repairs.
  • Utilizes Asset Essentials to note completion/close-out of assigned work orders.
  • Picks-up and delivers Library materials and runs errands.
  • Assembles, moves, and adjusts shelving and other Library furniture and equipment.
  • Makes minor repairs to furniture and fixtures.
  • Performs outside grounds care and landscape maintenance, including snow and ice removal.
  • Responsible for opening and closing of building, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.
  • Experience with HVAC, electrical and plumbing maintenance is preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license, access to a personal vehicle and proof of current automobile insurance required.
  • Ability to work flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, and to be “on call” for emergencies.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read and write in English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone and in writing, with staff, public and on-site vendors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills, including email and word processing.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and duties.
  • Ability to solve job-related problems.
  • In the absence of supervisory staff, ability to determine when to call the Facilities Manager to resolve an issue that cannot be handled in-house.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers as required, and ability to reach overhead.
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, balance, stoop, bend, reach, kneel, crouch, lift, crawl, twist on a regular basis.
  • Ability to climb and work from a ladder and an overhead lift.
  • Ability to lift and handle 70 lbs.
  • Ability to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently.
