Job Title: Library Director

Schedule: 60-75 hours per month, 14 hrs per week M-F 2-6, can vary. 

Maximum of 75 hrs per month

Job Objective: The Library Director is responsible for management of the Camp Point Public Library and carrying out the CPPL policies as established by the Board of Trustees and is accountable for all activities, programs and services offered by the Camp Point Public Library.

Reports to: Camp Point Public Library Board of Trustees

Supervises: All other Library employees, contractors, and vendors

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Implements the policies of the Camp Point Public Library District Board of Trustees and makes recommendations for policy change as needed 

  • Attends meetings of the Board of Trustees and Committee meetings to represent staff and community needs

  • Evaluates and administers library programs such as circulation, reference, reader’s advisory services, children’s services, community services, and public information

  • Plans, organizes, supervises, and evaluates the work of employees in diversified library activities 

  • Coordinates staff trainings

  • Prepares a staff schedule

  • Reviews and approves selection of all materials for purchase in accordance with the Collection Development policy.

  • Coordinates public relations, publicity, etc., to the maximum benefit of the library. This includes operating and overseeing the library’s accounts on social media platforms

  • Directs the development, repair and ongoing maintenance of the library building and property

  • Prepares an annual budget and presents and defends budget requests before the Board of Trustees

  • Writes grants

  • Prepares necessary grants, local, and state level documents and reports including Per Capita, Ordinances, Resolutions, and Illinois Public Library Annual Report (IPLAR)

  • Prepares regular narrative and statistical reports for the Board of Trustees, assists in preparing meeting agendas and materials

  • Develops short and long term goals and plans for collections, services, and programs in keeping with the library’s mission and operating policies to meet present and future community needs

  • Serves as the Open Meeting Act Officer for CPPL

  • Participates in professional meetings, classes, conferences, workshops and organizations

  • Promotes the library within the local, regional and state communities

  • Coordinates with Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) staff to keep the library up to date on policies and procedures

  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Trustees

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency with computer knowledge and skills, including basic understanding of operating systems, hardware, software, networks, online databases and content design 

  • Ability to think analytically and exercise initiative

  • Ability to prioritize work, meet established deadlines, delegate duties, and attend to details as appropriate

  • Knowledge and desire to work with community resources

  • Knowledge of library organization, law, standards, and resources 

  • Professionalism and integrity in appearance and conduct

  • Skilled in budget planning, fiscal conservation, and management experience

  • Willingness to learn and grow

  • Have own transportation with appropriate insurance and be willing to travel on behalf of the CPPL to training or meetings as necessary

Education, Experience, and Training

  • Advanced schooling is required

  • Library Technical Assistant (LTA) Certificate, Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in related fields of Library Science, Literature or Management is preferred

  • Progressively responsible management experience, including at least 2 yrs in a supervisory role is preferred

Work Environment

The majority of the work is performed in a general office or library environment. This position requires the flexibility to work extended or varying hours each day as needed, regular weekend and evening hours are required. Periodic participation and attendance at events and training is required, which may include travel.
