  • The Digital Initiatives Specialist plays a crucial role in the digitization and preservation of physical materials from the college's archival collections as well as preserving specific college administrative records along with the scholarly output of our students and faculty. Primary responsibilities include managing the Libraries' digital preservation initiatives, providing leadership in creating, organizing, and curating digital materials, and the supervision of the institutional repository.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities:**Manages the library's digital resource platforms Omeka and Open Works, the Digital Commons Institutional Repository; CONTENTdm and Collection Builder; tracking usage statistics; preserving upper-level college administration records

  • Oversees a digitization center, Digital Collections, including the training, supervision, and mentorship of 5-10 student assistants
  • Develops and implements procedures, workflows, and other necessary documentation for the institutional repository in support of the Wooster Open Access Resolution and other priorities
  • Collaborates with the Special Collections Librarian to identify archival content to incorporate into our digitization workflows
  • As a member of the Digital Initiatives Team, seeks out grant-based funding for digital projects, provides consultation to academic departments, faculty, and students for digitization needs as well as supporting the Digital Initiative Librarian as a thought partner on digital scholarship at the College of Wooster
  • Creates and adheres to digitization standards particularly on metadata protocols and standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, and/or METS for projects where the library serves as a collaborative partner.
  • Assists students with the submission of their Independent Study projects, which may include generating web accessible and/or written tutorials and providing in-person assistance during the peak period of submission.
  • In collaboration with the Digital Initiative Librarian and Special Collections Librarian, develops and implement a long-term digital preservation program for digital scholarship and digital collections.
  • Regularly uploads newly digitized and born-digital content to Digital Collections' digital preservation system.
  • Provides key support for the library's migration to the Alma Library Services Platform, migrating collections to Alma Digital and ensuring Wooster's digital content is discoverable to students and faculty
  • Supports Open Access resolution, institutional repository, digital projects developed under current grants, institutional research data, born digital scholarship, and digitized content.
  • Coordinates partnerships with key external partners on digital initiatives (e.g., Ohio5 Digital Initiatives Subcommittee).

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • The qualified candidate will have two years of digitization experience in an archival repository or library with experience managing complex digitization projects.
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience will be considered.Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and computer skills are necessary for this position as well as supervisory experience.Knowledge:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of processing and preserving archival collections, including digital preservation standards, workflows, and best practices.
  • Experience with handling rare/archival materials and knowledge of scanning methods and hardware for archival documents, including working with a variety of image formats.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of metadata standards for describing digital collections, including Dublin Core, MODS, DACS, METS, and EAD.
  • Experience with institutional repository and digital content management platforms, including CONTENTdm, Omeka, Collection Builder, and Digital CommonsAbilities:
  • Demonstrates an ability to collaborate & work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, faculty, alumni, and the general public.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, work under deadlines, and prioritize projects to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
