DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY (DSU) is a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, whose primary role is to contribute to intellectual, social, economic, and cultural development, especially to Southwestern North Dakota. The mission of the Theodore Roosevelt Center is to promote the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, particularly as it relates to his time in the North Dakota Badlands. The Center will carry out this mission in such a way as to enhance the academic mission of Dickinson State University, involving students wherever possible in the creation and maintenance of the Theodore Roosevelt digital library and other initiatives.

DSU is seeking a Digital Collections Cataloger and Archivist. The Digital Collections Cataloger and Archivist creates and reviews metadata for collections in the Theodore Roosevelt Digital Library and helps to train and support others assisting with the cataloging. They also work with newly acquired physical archival collections to prepare them for storage, preservation, and presentation on the web and in other media.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree or higher in Library Science, History, or a related field

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

  • Proficiency with computers and CMS systems

  • Strong written communication skills

  • Detail oriented

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills

  • Proficiency in reading and comprehending 19th/20th century handwriting

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with special collections and digital assets

  • Experience working with physical archival objects and collections

  • Experience with genealogical research

  • Familiarity with Gilded Age/Progressive Era History

DELIVERABLES & OUTCOMES:

  • The Digital Collections Cataloger and Archivist will create metadata for Theodore Roosevelt Digital Library, catalog digital assets, and prepare physical archival collections.

  • Apply project standards, research, and best practices in archival sciences

  • Create appropriate item-level metadata to make the digital library searchable and accessible

  • Produce accurate transcriptions of selected documents

  • Maintain the Theodore Roosevelt Center's physical archive and special collections

  • Advise Theodore Roosevelt Center staff regarding developments in the project and its archive.

  • The Digital Collections Cataloger will cooperate with other staff members in the training and supervision of volunteers, interns, and students working in the digital library.

  • Provide training for volunteers, interns, and student workers

  • Assist with the recruitment of volunteers, interns and student workers.

  • As part of the Center project team, the Digital Collections Cataloger and Archivist will participate in Center's strategic plan.

  • Assist in identifying documents and collections for inclusion in exhibits and other Center uses

  • Participate in web site content development. This may include web design support, interpretative content, or dissemination by way of presentations

  • Participate in research requests and generally meet research and reference needs of patrons

  • Collaborate with partner institutions

  • Support the director of the Center in communications, archival activities, and other relevant duties associated with digital asset management and maintaining special collections

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

  • Salary range of $40,000-50,000/annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience
