Dean of the J. Murrey Atkins Library

 

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Library. Reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean serves as leader of the J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte, North Carolina’s urban research university.

 

As one of 368 campuses nationwide currently holding the community engagement classification by the Carnegie Foundation, the university expects to also attain R1 status in early 2025, reaffirming its commitment to meeting the needs of a growing, thriving region.

 

The library is the home of the university archives and the university art collection, as well as numerous other special collections. In addition, the library provides spaces for study, equipment loans, research support, a digital repository of faculty and student work, digital archives, and information literacy instruction as well as innovation and maker spaces.

The next Dean will address the following priorities as well as determine best practices to achieve them:

 

        Develop and execute on a vision to serve the expectations of an R1 research university

        Hire, mentor and retain exceptional talent

        Continue work to revitalize and reimagine library spaces

        Expand access to library services and materials

        Lead fundraising for the library

        Advocate for growth of library, its programs, mission, and future

 

The Dean must have a master’s degree in library or information sciences from an ALA-accredited or other nationally accredited program, an international equivalent degree, and/or related advanced degree. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the Dean as noted above.

 

This is a full-time position that will be performed on site in North Carolina. Salary commensurate with experience with a generous benefits package. Information about working at UNC Charlotte and employee benefits are available on the university’s Human Resources webpage.

 

Special Note to Applicants: The selected candidate may be eligible for a one-time sign-on bonus of up to $5,000. This amount is dependent on candidate qualifications and will be determined by the hiring manager.

 

The desired start date for this position is January 1, 2025, or as soon after that date as possible.
