Peotone Public Library District is looking for a friendly, personable circulation clerk to join our library team.  Circulation staff need to accommodate the episodic nature of the circulation desk with professionalism and kindness.  A service-oriented attitude is a must as our library strives to uphold the highest standards of service possible.  The successful candidate will be flexible, detail-oriented, and precise while keeping service moving at a quick pace.  

The Circulation II Clerk is responsible for staffing the circulation desk and shelving library materials as needed.  They are active at the circulation desk: checking in and checking out materials, processing deliveries from our system, and processing the paging list.  They frequently engage patrons of all ages in a friendly and open manner.  

Essential Functions

  • Performs check-in and check-out functions, renews items, collects fines and fees, and operates the cash register.  
  • Provides assistance with the self-checkout, online card catalog, and holds management.
  • Prints and pulls materials from hold pick-list and traps, labels, and routes holds.
  • Performs patron data entry and updates patron information in Integrated Library System (ILS) database.  Registers new patrons, processes digital cards, and renews current patrons.
  • Performs circulation opening and closing procedures
  • Assists library patrons with computer printing, photocopiers, faxing and scanning.
  • Sorts materials by Dewey Decimal and library procedures.  
  • Shelves library materials according to standard best practices and under department head guidance.
  • Collects items from book drops: internal, external, and outreach locations.
  • Understands spine label designation and knows location for library materials.  
  • Shelf reads to maintain order of the shelves.
  • Shifts materials as needed to maintain shelf space and tidiness of the library building.
  • Dusts and cleans shelves and display racks.
  • Pulls books and processes holds for patrons from the pick list as needed.
  • Greets patrons and provides directional information.  Answers telephones and provides general information.  
  • Performs light housekeeping duties.
  • Locate items for patrons and place holds as needed.     
  •  Availability must include at least one evening a week and one Saturday a month.

Work Environment

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment, including significant computer work, phones, and copiers.  

Physical Requirements

  • Constantly discern items near and far.
  • Frequently stands for long periods of time.
  • Constantly retrieves materials from shelves and boxes.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and clearly with patrons and staff.
  • Lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight (5-20 lbs), and occasionally moving boxes and carts weighing up to 50 lbs.  
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching and pushing.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system and alphabetical systems and ability to apply those systems to library materials.  
  • Basic internet and computer skills
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to operate office equipment.
