The University of Michigan Library in Ann Arbor is one of the world's largest academic research libraries. Any time the libraries are open, the Library's Circulation and Access Services and Distributed Library department staff are available to help faculty, students, staff, and visitors find and use our collections, services, and resources.

As a member of the Circulation & Access Services team, you will provide information, answer questions, and connect patrons to the services the library has to offer. Like all members of the Library Access and Fulfillment team, you will uphold our commitment to making our spaces, services, and collections welcoming, accessible, and safe for a diverse community of employees and users. We are the first point of contact providing information services in each of our library buildings. You will report to the Evening Manager for the Hatcher Graduate Library and Shapiro Undergraduate Libraries. This work will take place on campus.

  • Perform Information Services desk responsibilities which include: maintaining user accounts, course reserve & physical material processing, and checking out and checking in physical and shelving material.
  • Provide basic library and campus information services to users in-person and over email or phone.
  • Complete forms about interactions at service desks to help inform decision-making related to service improvements at the Library.
  • Respond to inquiries and communicate building access policies to library users.
  • Prioritize competing tasks and communicate changes to staff on duty.
  • Open and close buildings and service points.
  • Help train and support the work of temporary employees and students.Why Work at Michigan?

  • High School Graduate or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • 1+ years of demonstrated experience of strong written and verbal communications with diverse audiences.

The expected schedule for this position is from 4 pm to 12:30 am, Sunday through Thursday. This work schedule may be modified based on operational needs. Schedule may vary during semester breaks and weeks which contain University holidays. Modes of Work

The person in this position routinely moves through the building to access materials. They would need to regularly ascend/descend ladders to retrieve and shelve materials. They must be able to navigate the facility using the stairs during an emergency. This person may occasionally need to travel from building to building on campus (campus buses are available to ride for free). They must have the ability to move and/or transport materials that weigh up to 25 pounds.
