The Role: The Library seeks a dynamic Children’s Services Librarian to join our small team. Our ideal candidate brings collaborative and lively energy while maintaining a safe, welcoming environment for children and their families. The Children’s Services Librarian works with staff and local organizations to creatively plan, develop, and implement services and programs for children and their families. Strong interpersonal, technology, and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to plan, coordinate, collaborate, and serve our library community.

Education/Experience: A Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of experience working with children and youth in a library or educational setting are preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

General Responsibilities:

  • Plan, manage, and implement services and programs for children and families at Lawrence Memorial Library, including storytimes for toddlers and preschoolers, children’s programs and summer programs with support from library staff.
  • Advocate for and evaluate services for youth within the community.
  • Review, develop, and manage children’s books and materials.
  • Work closely with the Library Director to develop goals and objectives for youth services as part of the Library’s strategic plan.
  • Provide readers’ advisory to patrons and families.
  • Communicate with local school staff, daycares, and area organizations to facilitate outreach opportunities.
  • Serve as part of the library’s team to ensure coordination with library administration and other staff.

  • Broad knowledge/interest in children’s needs and development, and a genuine caring respect for children.
  • A broad knowledge of children’s literature.
  • Ability to plan, manage, and evaluate children’s services and programs.
  • Ability to lead and delegate tasks to staff supporting children’s room activities and programs.
  • Willingness and ability to work with other agencies serving the needs of children in the community.
  • Creativity, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and adherence to best practices.
  • Knowledge of basic library services and tools, with opportunities for continuing education and to attain your Certificate of Public Librarianship from the Department of Libraries.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers, office machines, and ability to learn new library technologies.

Compensation: This is a part-time position of 25 hours per week and includes paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, and retirement benefits. The job requires some weekend availability. The pay range for this position is $20-24/hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
