Children's Librarian

The Maquoketa Public Library is looking for someone excited to take on our youth services department including collection development, programming, and community outreach. Our children's area is a wonderful resource and we look forward to hiring someone who will be a resource to whole community by providing exciting programming and outreach during our Summer Reading program and throughout the rest of the year.

Solid grounding in children's education and literature, customer service, teamwork, and project management are a must. The candidate will:

• Develop and maintain the Children's and, if interested, the Young Adults' collections: order and purchase materials for the department, ensure all materials and resources are current and in good shape
• Develop and implement programs including story times, arts and craft activities, family friendly programs and performances, and the Summer Reading Program
• Promote events and materials via flyers, displays, and social media
• Perform outreach at local schools, daycares, and other locations
• Register new patrons, check materials in and out, explain and enforce library procedures and policies, print, copy, scan, and fax documents
• Answer the telephone and address general questions and short reference questions
• Stay current regarding libraries, especially local, and librarianship
• Work well with the rest of the staff, including the Director, to make sure the library runs smoothly and provides good service to the community

All work is performed under the administrative direction of the Library Director. Employee should be proficient in using technology including computers, copier, and smart phones including Microsoft Office, email, and social media. There will be frequent contact with the general public, schools, vendors, and other groups via phone, email, social media, and in-person. The ability to communicate well in these situations is very important.

This is an hourly position. Salary range is $38,000 - $42,000/year. Schedule is 40 hours a week, Monday - Friday 8:30 AM to 5 PM, with flexibility to allow for evening and weekend programs as needed. The library is closed Sundays.

Requirements: Master's in Library Science preferred, Bachelor's Degree required. One to three years of children's educational or library experience preferred or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
