This Associate Dean will support and supervise 3-5 coordinators of the libraries’ Learning & Research team and will also serve as the lead for a major operational objective: human resources. The exact assignment of responsibilities will be made to match the knowledge, skill set, and interests of the members of the senior leadership team and may change over time as our organization and mission develop.


Associate Dean for Learning & Research
Teams including Information Literacy, Music Library, and Instructional Materials Center directly engage with faculty and students through liaison relationships that support research and information literacy, scholarship, grant writing, and creative activities of Appalachian State University people. These teams connect to faculty & students through a deep understanding of their disciplines and curricula. Library faculty instruction is integrated into every program of study from general education goals to support for graduate and doctoral level work.

The Associate Dean with personnel responsibilities works closely with University Human Resources and Academic Affairs to initiate new employee searches and personnel actions and to sustain annual processes of faculty promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review. The Associate Dean will take the lead on leadership and professional development initiatives that span the entire organization.

Requirements

American Library Association-accredited master’s degree and/or other relevant advanced degree at the masters or doctoral level.
Ability to meet the criteria for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor with tenure. (See Faculty Handbook)
Significant and appropriate experience in libraries and/or higher education, including increasingly complex responsibilities in one or more leadership positions.
Impressive record of professional writing, with experience authoring & editing documents for a wide audience. Examples of relevant professional writing may include organizational policies, white papers, academic scholarship, or public relations/marketing pieces.
Significant and varied experience collaborating to accomplish goals with faculty, university students, staff, and/or community members.
Willingness and ability to represent the University Libraries visibly, including giving compelling and persuasive presentations and actively participating in or leading external and internal meetings.
Demonstrated experience using inclusive decision-making and management as a leader and supervisor over several years.
Ability to resolve conflict productively and respectfully when opinions diverge or tensions arise.
Demonstration of progressively responsible experience in management and personnel policy, specifically recruitment, retention and development of faculty and staff.
