Assistant Program Director and Head of General Collections Metadata
Metadata Services Program

The University of California San Diego Library seeks motivated, creative and collaborative applicants to join the Library as Assistant Program Director (APD) and Head of General Collections Metadata in the Metadata Services Program (MS). This position will provide bibliographic metadata expertise and oversight for various formats from a wide variety of disciplines.

Responsibilities of the Position

Reporting to the Program Director of Metadata Services, the Assistant Program Director and Head of General Collections Metadata provides leadership in programmatic planning, assessment, and administration. Additionally, they are the librarian responsible for leading the efforts and directing the work of the 6.4 FTE in the General Collections Metadata Unit to describe and provide access to physical and electronic monographs, serials, maps, integrating resources, music and media resources according to national standards. Working in close collaboration with the management team of Unit Heads in Metadata Services, the Assistant Program Director and Head of General Collections Metadata will provide expertise on the unique needs of bibliographic formats in the multiple UC San Diego databases of record, including UC Library Search (Alma/Primo), the UC San Diego Library Digital Collections DAMS, and other systems as necessary. The APD and Head of General Collections Metadata will possess and continue to develop expertise in metadata best practices, emerging trends, technologies and tools and recommend their adoption if they further the goals of the Library, MS and the General Collections Metadata Unit.

As part of the MS Unit Heads Group, this position shares management responsibility for the Metadata Services Program to promote the mission and goals of the UC San Diego Library; personnel and resource management; the development and implementation of new policies and procedures; recommending and adapting new technologies; training; and communication. This includes, but is not limited to, the exploration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), linked data, and other emerging technologies. As a librarian, this position would be expected to be professionally active to further the profession, and contribute to the progression of the Metadata Services Program.

Assistant Program Director

  • Provides intellectual leadership and vision across the Metadata Services Program. As a member of the MS management team, MS Unit Heads, shares leadership, strategic direction and management responsibility for the Metadata Services Program (MS).
  • Assists the Program Director in strategic initiatives ensuring goals are met.
  • Acts on behalf of the Program Director in their absence.
  • Oversees production statistics gathering, data analytics, and assessment.
  • Assists with fiscal management for the Program.
  • Coordinates relevant program-wide training and provides cataloging-related training to other UC San Diego staff as needed.
  • Serves as a liaison and works collaboratively with acquisitions, public services and collection development staff to prioritize and create appropriate access to library materials.


Head of General Collections Metadata Unit

  • Supervises, hires, trains, and sets direction for the General Collections Metadata Unit of 6.4 FTE staff and student employees.
  • Catalogs and has primary responsibility for coordinating and supervising General Collections cataloging (original, copy, and batch processing of physical and electronic monographs, serials, integrating resources, maps, music and media).
  • Provides intellectual leadership for emerging issues in metadata, cataloging, and knowledge management. Coordinates and manages the development and implementation of metadata strategies that support the discovery of the Library’s general collections. Leads the unit to investigate, experiment with, and implement new approaches and/or batch processes for creating and manipulating bibliographic and authority data.
  • Contributes authority records to NACO and creates bibliographic records for BIBCO and CONSER.
  • Documents projects, standards, policies, procedures and decisions.
  • Serves on Library-wide, Campus-wide, and/or UC System-wide committees.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • MLS/MLIS or equivalent advanced degree. Other appropriate degree and equivalent experience in one or more fields related to library services may be substituted.
  • Demonstrated strong experience cataloging either books, serials, integrating resources, electronic resources, maps, music or media using Resource Description & Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), LC Classification, and MARC-21 format and familiarity working with non-MARC formats.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing staff and providing collaborative and inclusive leadership with peers and direct reports.
  • Evidence of contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion and demonstrated proficiency working in a collaborative, dynamic and culturally diverse environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to identifying critical areas for professional development, and acquiring new skills and tools for continuous improvement of user-centered library services.

Preferred qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to read notated music and knowledge of the special features of notated music, media, and electronic resources.
  • Familiarity with emerging Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools to aid metadata workflows.
  • Demonstrated reading knowledge of at least one language other than English.
  • Demonstrated experience with (meta)data wrangling using scripting languages and/or tools such as OpenRefine, MarcEdit, MatchMarc, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Proven expertise in prioritizing multiple concurrent projects in order to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
