Metadata Services Program
The University of California San Diego Library seeks motivated, creative and collaborative applicants to join the Library as Assistant Program Director (APD) and Head of General Collections Metadata in the Metadata Services Program (MS). This position will provide bibliographic metadata expertise and oversight for various formats from a wide variety of disciplines.
Responsibilities of the Position
Reporting to the Program Director of Metadata Services, the Assistant Program Director and Head of General Collections Metadata provides leadership in programmatic planning, assessment, and administration. Additionally, they are the librarian responsible for leading the efforts and directing the work of the 6.4 FTE in the General Collections Metadata Unit to describe and provide access to physical and electronic monographs, serials, maps, integrating resources, music and media resources according to national standards. Working in close collaboration with the management team of Unit Heads in Metadata Services, the Assistant Program Director and Head of General Collections Metadata will provide expertise on the unique needs of bibliographic formats in the multiple UC San Diego databases of record, including UC Library Search (Alma/Primo), the UC San Diego Library Digital Collections DAMS, and other systems as necessary. The APD and Head of General Collections Metadata will possess and continue to develop expertise in metadata best practices, emerging trends, technologies and tools and recommend their adoption if they further the goals of the Library, MS and the General Collections Metadata Unit.
As part of the MS Unit Heads Group, this position shares management responsibility for the Metadata Services Program to promote the mission and goals of the UC San Diego Library; personnel and resource management; the development and implementation of new policies and procedures; recommending and adapting new technologies; training; and communication. This includes, but is not limited to, the exploration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), linked data, and other emerging technologies. As a librarian, this position would be expected to be professionally active to further the profession, and contribute to the progression of the Metadata Services Program.
