Job Summary/Basic Function

Reporting to the Special Collections Librarian and under minimal supervision the Archivist will provide access to all archival collections compiling finding aids, creating collection-level records or metadata descriptions, creating controlled vocabularies to assist online researchers, and maintaining a database on collections and storage space allocation. Provides curatorial leadership for assigned collection(s) and conducts historical and bibliographic research for tasks as necessary. In collaboration with the unit’s faculty and other staff, implements unit priorities, assists in drafting policies, writes and updates archival processing and digitization workflows and procedures. Assists in supervising practicum assistants and the unit’s student workers. In collaboration with the unit faculty and staff, researches, designs, and installs exhibits. Assists with the design and content creation of the unit’s website and other external communications. Collaborates with unit faculty in donor cultivation. In collaboration with unit faculty, organizes, and staffs events, conducts workshops and instruction sessions. Collaborates with unit faculty to provide reading room reference assistance and coverage. Assists with the daily oversight of the Special Collections facility, which includes but is not limited to monitoring and maintaining lab and vault equipment and submitting service requests as needed. Performs other related tasks as assigned. Works occasional weekend and evening hours as necessary.

Required Education

Master’s degree in history or related field or a Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA accredited program

Required Related Experience

At least 1 year working a library, museum or archives environment

Desirable Related Experience

  • Experience in processing archival collections, including experience in creating finding aids, metadata descriptions, digitization, and care of tangible and digital materials.
  • Exhibit creation and installation experience
  • Teaching and instruction experience
  • Cataloging experience
  • Preservation and/or conservation experience
