Position Purpose: The Adult Services Librarian is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and executing Library programs for adults aged 18 and over, including intergenerational programming. Position goals include fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for the community, educating the community on Library resources and conducting user instruction, creating opportunities for adult education, advancing technology education, community collaboration, fostering a love of reading, and creating joyful experiences for patrons.

The Adult Services Librarian is responsible for maintaining a working budget for programming expenses and working closely with the Assistant Director or Friends’ Treasurer to ensure performers are paid correctly and on time. This position contributes to Library grant applications, and works with the Library Director to seek and complete grants as needed.

This position has scheduled service desk hours, and is required to cover any service desk as needed. While working on the Information Services Desk, this position provides user instruction, technology assistance, and answers reference questions.

This position assists in collection development and management.

This role requires a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours depending on the programming needs and activities.

● Works with the Director and Assistant Director as a member of the Programming Committee to plan the schedule of programs and events for Adults and for Intergenerational programming. ● Introduces and oversees programs in progress as needed. ● Communicates with the Custodian weekly on room set-up needs. Assist with room set up and breakdown as needed. ● Coordinates art exhibits with the artists and the Exhibit Committee.

● Assists the Friends in fundraiser and event coordination. ● Handles all Community Room requests and makes reservations for groups as needed, according to the Library’s Community Spaces Policy. ● Works with the Assistant Director to coordinate and schedule events and workshops for The Nest. Makes reservations for the space as needed. ● Works with the Friends’ Garden Committee to coordinate needs. ● Set up technology for groups using the Community Room and provide instruction if needed. ● Communicates with performers and vendors; develops contracts and collects invoices for the Assistant Director. Serves as the contact person for performers and other event leaders. May communicate with the Friends’ Treasurer to resolve questions regarding performer payment. ● Produces and distributes flyers, press releases, email blasts, and posts on social media and the website in order to promote all events. Works effectively with other programming Staff to coordinate marketing materials. ● Assists with the creation of the quarterly newsletter. ● Works on the public service desks as needed. Assists patrons with technology and reference needs. ● Conducts outreach to the community as the schedule allows. ● Attends Library workshops and conferences in order to stay on top of trends and services. ● Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as situation dictates.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience: Master’s Degree in Library Science is required

Special Requirements/Licenses:

Knowledge of Evergreen ILS – Web-based Integrated Library Systems, and ability to perform troubleshooting. Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge: Working knowledge of modern library policies and procedures, methods, practices, and materials. Knowledge of basic reference sources and research techniques. Knowledge of database and online reference sources, and Internet. Knowledge of computers, computer applications, and library system software.

Ability: Ability to communicate effectively orally, in writing, by telephone, and in emails with the public. Ability to represent the library effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, peers, associates, and the general public. Ability to prioritize, and complete projects independently and as a member of a team. Ability to complete tasks, effectively, and multi-task while working with frequent interruptions. Ability to troubleshoot public computer problems.

Skill: Excellent customer service. Proficient oral and written communication skills for constant communications with the public, other libraries, and CWMARS. Skills to operate computer and computer software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets and presentation applications software, and Evergreen ILS. Skills to troubleshoot computer software, such as Evergreen ILS. Skills to teach patrons and assist patrons with computer, computer operations, and computer software applications. Skills to operate office equipment and machines such as printers, fax, or copiers.

Work is performed in a busy library/office setting. This position regularly is required to talk and hear. Frequently sits, uses hands to finger, handle or feel, stoups, kneels, crouches, or crawls, and reaches with hands and arms. There is occasional standing and walking. The duties require regularly being able to handle, feel objects, controls, and operate office machines, such as telephone, computer, digital equipment, scanner, microfilm reader/printer, fax machine, and photocopiers. This position must be able to retrieve library materials from stacks for patrons, quickly, safely, and with ease. This position frequently is required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift up to 30 pounds, and seldom lift up to 60 pounds. Vision and hearing are at or correctable to a normal range for close and distance vision. Tasks require viewing computer screens for extended periods of time. Some evening or weekend work may be required.
