We are seeking an Access Services Supervisor to manage the day-to-day operations of the Frary Library's fulfillment operations, service desk, bookroom, and public spaces. This position leads full-time staff and part-time student assistants in delivering exceptional service to the Hopkins Bloomberg Center community, implementing and maintaining operational policies and procedures. This position collaborates with JH Libraries Resource Sharing colleagues on library policy and workflows.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility for staffing, scheduling/operating, and managing DC-based resource sharing activities and the Frary Library Service Desk.
  • In close collaboration with the Frary Library Associate Director, lead recruitment, professional development, and performance/goal setting of full-time access services staff.
  • Interviews, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates part-time student assistants. Manages student assistant payroll (i.e., job posting, onboarding, timesheet approval).
  • Maintains thorough and clearly written policies and procedure documentation for staff, initiating and creating new materials as needed, and revising existing ones.
  • Addresses patron issues, solving problems when possible or referring to other library staff or Hopkins Bloomberg Center units (i.e. IT, Facilities, Student Affairs) to ensure quality service.
  • Manages response to access/fulfillment questions submitted to the library's email service account and ticketing system.
  • Continually seeks to enhance knowledge and understanding of the JH Library's integrated systems, particularly with regard to its fulfillment and reserves modules.
  • Participates in regular meetings of the JH Libraries-wide Resource Sharing Interest Group reporting pertinent information back to Frary Library staff.
  • Triages reference/research requests at the Service Desk, directing users to librarians as needed, or assisting with directional reference to online resources.
  • Coordinates bookroom stacks maintenance.
  • Coordinates monitoring of physical spaces ensuring the Frary Library is clean and scheduled maintenance is being carried out.
  • Coordinates all supply requests and expenditures.
  • Maintains a flexible schedule when needed to cover evening or weekend shifts on occasion, as needed.
  • Generates reports using the Library's integrated system, for the purpose of setting/updating policies, usage statistics, and data cleanup.
  • Works closely with the Frary Library Associate Director and other librarians to establish policies and local workflows for the ALMA fulfillment system (including planning, testing, and implementation of upgrades and changes)
  • As a member of the Frary Library's management team, initiates and discusses improvements in library service and implement changes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move about on foot, operate a keyboard, perform some heavy lifting, and reach all levels of shelves.

Work Environment/Conditions & Additional Information

  • It is the responsibility of the Access Services Supervisor to ensure all desk staff know basic information about most other areas of the Library, as they will all be called upon to answer questions about electronic reference sources, reserve readings, interlibrary loan, status of books on order, periodicals holdings, printers/scanners, etc.
  • The person in this position is responsible for setting an overall tone of helpful, friendly, efficient service.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Student assistants, as needed (typically 8-10).
  • May supervise one (1) full-time employee.Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
  • Four years related experience.Preferred Qualifications
  • Alma, ILLiad, and Ares experience.
  • Supervisory experience with demonstrated success in collaborative management based on goal setting, teamwork, and performance feedback.
