Manage the library. Process circulation and reserves materials. Train and supervise Access Services staff members. Hire, train, and supervise student assistants. Ensure that all materials are shelved correctly and report any shifting needs to the Outreach and Access Services Librarian. Process reserves as needed.

Essential Functions Statement(s) Customer Service

  • Customer Service is a crucial part of Access Services. The person in this position must deal tactfully with patrons. This person must also provide exceptional customer service at the Circulation desk. This requires the person to juggle competing demands on his/her attention and time.
  • Train, supervise, evaluate, and assist in hiring part-time Access Services Assistants.
  • Ensure that the library circulation desk is adequately staffed. Report staffing issues promptly to the Outreach and Access Services Librarian.
  • Communicate regularly with the Outreach and Access Services Librarian about issues that arise.

Supervise student employees

  • Follow established procedures in training student workers and apply existing employment policies.
  • Supervise the daily work of student assistants to ensure smooth functioning of the circulation and reserves units.
  • Consult with the Outreach and Access Services Librarian as needed on disciplinary issues and other concerns about student workers.
  • Advise and assist the Outreach and Access Services Librarian in developing documentation and policies impacting student workers.

Circulation Desk

  • Provide excellent customer service to all patrons of the library by assisting them in a friendly and efficient manner.
  • Supervise student desk workers and ensure that they are providing excellent customer service.
  • Check out materials to patrons and check-in returned materials.
  • Refer reference questions to a librarian and take proactive measures to ensure that patrons are connected with the correct person to answer their question
  • Report missing materials and conduct searches as time and staffing allows
  • Monitor copiers and printers for jams and add paper as needed.
  • Ask for help if the desk becomes busier than you can handle alone.

Reserves

  • Process incoming reserves according to pre-established policies in a timely and accurate manner
  • Assist faculty and student patrons with reserve questions
  • Maintain reserve collection in a neat and orderly fashion
  • Apply pre-established copyright policies and communicate copyright issues to the Outreach and Access Services Librarian
  • Create persistent URLs for electronic reserves that we already have available
  • Scan electronic reserves
  • Report software and hardware issues related to reserves to the Outreach and Access Services Librarian
  • Remove reserves at the end of each semester according to pre-established policies and procedures.
  • Advise and assist the Outreach and Access Services Librarian as needed on reserves projects

Circulation Processing

  • Report and search for missing books as needed.
  • Check circulation email accounts and respond to patron questions
  • Assist in database clean-up projects, such as removing duplicate patrons and checking patron loads.
  • Ensure that the catalog status on items is correct and change as needed.
  • Troubleshoot notice and fine issues and report them to the Outreach and Access Services Librarian.
  • Other projects as assigned.

Stacks

  • Ensure correct shelving of materials
  • Work with Outreach and Access Services Librarian to plan and implement shifts of the collection as needed

Other Duties

  • Assist the Outreach and Access Services Librarian as needed.
  • Provide coverage for early morning, evening, and weekend hours as needed to ensure that the Library is adequately staffed.

Experience: Previous academic library experience strongly preferred, two years of library work-related experience preferred Communication/Language: Ability to read, listen to and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write and communicate simple correspondence. Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Computer Skills Electronic communication, data entry, Microsoft Office, and experience working with large databases.
