An integral part of the Cornell University Library, the Access Services Department addresses the needs of system-wide access services functions, including circulation, interlibrary services, offsite storage, document delivery, scanning, reserves, stacks management, building coverage, patron billing, and other unit-specific tasks such as equipment loan or patron carrels/studies.

Under the direction of the Access Services Manager, the Access Services Assistant works regular shifts at the Mann Library Help Desk to assist patrons with checking out/returning library materials, course reserves, interlibrary loan, equipment loans, and poster printing needs.

As the Access Services Assistant, you will:

  • Consistently interpret, communicate, and enforce library policies.
  • Answer a variety of questions via email, phone, and in-person.
  • Functionally supervise student employees while on the desk.
  • Support the library's conference/meeting rooms, classrooms, and collaborative areas by providing technical support for computing and AV equipment.
  • Provide backup support for Interlibrary Loan and document delivery scanning.
  • Assist the Multimedia Support Specialist with maintenance and general support of the library's specialized loanable equipment; including but not limited to laptops, video cameras, digital cameras, audio recorders, digital projectors, and DIY/maker equipment (button-makers, sewing machines, etc.).
  • Provide technical assistance to library faculty, staff, and patrons on the use of equipment.
  • Help develop and coordinate equipment loan policies and procedures for all Library units as part of the Unified Access Services department.
  • Support poster and specialty printing services, including group poster sessions.
  • Assist with training students and library staff on the use of large format printers (plotters).
  • Assist with routine maintenance and troubleshooting on plotters, and supply ordering as needed.
  • Communicate with Cornell IT on support for CU Print services and orders supplies, including paper, toner and maintenance kits on behalf of Mann Library.'
  • Sort incoming mail and manage supplies in supply closet.
  • Provide back-up for monitoring/approving room reservations in both Cornell University's scheduling system and the Library's space management system.
  • You may also be asked to provide backup for opening the library on occasion.

The Access Services Assistant is a full-time position. The weekly schedule for this role is generally Monday through Friday between the hours of 8AM-5PM, with occasional opening and weekend coverage as needed. Your exact schedule will be determined by your supervisor based on CUL needs.

  • Adaptability and Contribution to Departmental Excellence: Regularly contributes to refining departmental documents and procedures, staying informed about policy updates, and readily takes on new responsibilities, including technical training and equipment maintenance, to enhance service quality.

What We Need

  • Experience in successfully managing stressful situations when working with the public.
  • Demonstrated interest in and ability to learn about and troubleshoot AV equipment.

  • Two or more years of library public services experience.
