Description

Under the general direction of the Head of Access Services, manages circulation, reserve, collection maintenance, interlibrary loan, document delivery, access, and security functions for the Law Library.  Supervises and trains clerical and technical employees, casual employees, and a cohort of student workers. Provides oversight of access services weekend operations.

In conjunction with the Head of Access Services, plans, implements, and monitors circulation operations and policies in the Law Library.  Initiates new services for Law Library patrons and ensures quality of ongoing services.

Responsibilities: 

Oversees quality control and functionality of circulation-related components of the integrated library system, in conjunction with the Head of Access Services and the Technical Services Department.

Develops access policies for non-Yale Law Library users in conjunction with the Head of Access Services.

Administers interlibrary loan and document delivery services in the Law Library.  Works with other Yale University interlibrary loan units to develop programs for document delivery.   

Administers reserve collections and services. 

Administers looseleaf filing, supplementation of other materials, relocation of superseded library materials, and distribution of shelf-ready materials.

Responsible for Law Library web site content related to general information and circulation and access policies and procedures.

Plans and coordinates shifts and shelf reading projects.

Develops and maintains circulation staff work schedules.

Hires, trains, schedules, and evaluates C&T and student employees. 

Coordinates retrieval of Law Library books from Library Shelving Facility for patrons.  Coordinates processing of books to be sent to Library Shelving Facility and arranges for permanent withdrawal of books from LSF.  Ensures that Library Shelving Facility information is accurately recorded in online catalog.

Develops and maintains manuals, compiles, and analyzes usage statistics.

Oversees student journals use of library space and materials for citation-checking.

Supervises Law Library security operations and the work of Book Monitors, stacks operations, weekend access, and other projects.

Serves as liaison with Technical Services Department with regard to collection maintenance and serials.

Depending on qualifications, may participate in reference, instruction, and liaison activities.

Participates in library planning, committees, and task forces and engages in campus, regional and national professional organizations, and collaborative activities. 

Expected to be professionally active and represents the Library and the University in the academic, scholarly, and professional community. 

Participates in other endeavors to further the research mission of the Law School.

May be required to participate in disaster recovery activities.

Requirements

Education and Experience: 

1.  ALA accredited master’s degree in library science or foreign equivalent required.  ABA accredited J.D. or foreign equivalent preferred. Experience working in an academic law library or similarly situated environment preferred.

2.  Library experience including knowledge of circulation and document delivery operations.  Experience with Ex Libris Alma integrated library system and knowledge of legal materials preferred.

3.  Experience with a variety of software applications. Understanding of web development, database development, and digital imaging preferred.

4.  Demonstrated administrative and supervisory skills.

5.  Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with students, faculty, and staff and with a variety of situations requiring tact, poise, problem-solving, and multitasking; strong service orientation; excellent written and oral communication skills; self-motivation; enthusiasm; ability to foster a collaborative, collegial and team oriented work environment; strong organizational and analytic skills and detail orientation; solid understanding of bibliographic organization; ability to uphold high standards despite a variety of pressures;  ability to foster a team appreciation of  the needs of faculty, students, and researchers.
